GeorgeNissenwasaprolificandsometimeseccentricinventor,responsiblefora
largenumberofunusualinventions,butheisbestknownforhisfirst,thetrampoline.
Hislife-changingideawasformulatedwhen,asaschoolboy,hevisitedtouringcircuses.Hegazedinamazementastrapezeartistsperformedtheirdaringstunts.

Nissentookupgymnasticsanddivingwhenhewasyoung.In1933,hestartedat
theUniversityofIowa.Itwasduringhistimetherethathegottoknowhisgymnasticscoach,LarryGriswold,anddiscussedhisideaswithhim.[10]()This
happenedin1941.
Whilestillatschool,Nissenhadstaredexperimentinginthefamilygarage,using
metalfromthelocaljunkyardforaframeandstrongclothfromatentmaker,withstripsofmaterialfromoldcartyrestoattachtheclothtotheframe.Atuniversity,heandGriswolddevelopedthisidea[11]()Thebouncingrig,astheycalledit,provedhugelysuccessfulthereandthey
begantobelievethatitcouldhaveacommercialfuture.
Afteruniversity,Nissenwantedabreakandabitoffun,sohetouredwithtwoofhisfriends,performinganacrobaticshowatfairsintheUSandinMexico.
Thisprovedverypopular,andasintended,generatedcommercialinterest.
Thenextstageofthedevelopmentofthetrampolinewasmarkedoutbyapublicitystuntwithakangaroo,whichNissenhiredforademonstrationinCentralPark,NewYork.Heknewthatbybouncingatoneendofthetrampoline,hecouldstartthekangaroobouncingattheother.Nissenwantedtogetaphotographofbothhimselfandthekangarooinmid-airatthesametime.[13]()Theeventwasahugesuccessandthepicturewentroundtheworld.Nissendidtoo,sellinghisproductinEurope,Japan,SouthAfricaandSouthAmerica.
Nissentriedtodevelophisinventionbycreatingbouncinggames,butthetrampoline'spopularitywasgrowingsteadilyevenwithouthishelp.[14]()Indeed,thefirstworldchampionshipstookplaceattheRoyalAlbertHall,London,in1964.Ayearlater,theInternationalTrampolineFederationwasformed.ButNissenhadtowaituntil2000forhislifetimegoaltobeachieved.Thatyear,trampoliningwasaccordedultimaterespectabilitywhenitwasincludedintheSydneyOlympicGames.
Trampoliningcontinuestogrowinpopularityaspeoplerecognisethatitisgood
foryou,aswellasbeingfun.[15]()Abrilliantgymnastinhisyouth,hecould
stilldohandstandsintohis80sandyogaheadstandsinhis90s.
