Decadesbeforethefirstunaccompaniedchildwasputonaplanetograndma’sinthecareofaflightattendant,afewresourcefulparentsaccomplishedthesameendbysimplydroppingtheirkidsinthemail.

AccordingtoNationalPostalMuseumhistorianNancyPope,thefirstknowncaseofamailedbabywasin1913whenMr.andMrs.JesseBeaugeofGlenEste,Ohio,shippedtheir10-poundinfantsontohisgrandmother’shomeaboutamileaway,paying15centsinpostageandspringingfor$50ininsurance(becausetheywereworriers).
Butsomechildrenweremailedmuchfarther,Popesaid.EdnaNeffofPensacola,Fla.,was6whenshewaspackedoff—orpackagedoff—toherfather’shomeinChristiansburg,Va.,720milesaway.
Thepreciousparcelsweren’ttrulyparcelsinthebrown-paper.Insteadtheyweremorelikecompanionsinthearmsoftheircarriersorwalkedalongtheroute(路线).Butthemostfamousmailedchild,MayPierstorff,wasindeedsentbyanIdahorailwaymailcarin1914withtheappropriatestampsstucktohertravelingcoat.May’spicturesurvives,butnophysicalevidenceofhertrip.“Wewouldsurelovetohavethatcoat,”Popesaid.
In1914,thepostmastergeneralinstitutedaruleaboutthemailthatstandstothisday:
nohumans.Butthatdidn’tstopanambitiousthieffromcratinghimselfupandshippinghimselfairmail.WhenWilliamDeLucia,packedinatrunklabeled“MusicalInstruments”alongwithfoodandanoxygentank,wasairborne,heclimbedout,pilferedthousandsofdollars’worthofgoodsfromtheregisteredmailandsealedhimselfbackup.HewasarrestedattheAtlantaairportin1980afterhistrunkpoppedopenasitwasbeingunloaded.
