Theresearchteamfound,atthesametime,thatafterassessingtheeffectofpolyunsaturatedfatsmadeupoflargeramountsoffishandvegetableoilsandoliveoil,theseproductsareassociatedwithalowerriskofsufferingdepression.
Thereport,publishedintheonlinejournalPLOSONE,notedtheresearchwasperformedonaEuropeanpopulationthatenjoysarelativelylowintakeoftrans-fats—makinguponly0.4percentofthetotalenergytakeninbythevolunteers.“Despitethis,weobservedanincreaseintheriskofsufferingdepressionofnearly50percent,”saidresearcherMiguelMartinez.“OnthisbasiswethinkitofgreatimportancetotakethiseffectintoaccountincountriesliketheUnitedStates,wherethepercentageofenergyderivedfromthesefatsisaround2.5percent.”
