Steinbeckwasfirstmarriedin1930toCarolHenning.Themarriageendedindivorce(离婚)in1942.In1943SteinbeckmovedtoNewYorkCitywherehelivedfortherestofhislife.HemarriedthesingerGwyndolynCongerin1943andhadtwosons,Thom,bornin1944,andJohnbornin1946.Theyweredivorcedin1948andtwoyearslaterhemarriedhisthirdwife,ElaineScott.
In1962SteinbeckwasawardedtheNobelPrizeforLiterature(文学).Andin1964PresidentLyndonB.JohnsonpresentedhimwiththeUnitedStatesMedalofFreedom.
HediedofaheartattackinNewYorkonDecember20th,1968.
