LangwasborninSelkirk.HewastheeldestoftheeightchildrenborntoJohnLang,thetownclerkofSelkirk,andhiswifeJanePlenderleathSellar,whowasthedaughterofPatrickSellar,factortothefirstdukeofSutherland.On17April1875hemarriedLeonoraBlancheAlleyne,theyoungestdaughterofC.T.AlleyneofCliftonandBarbados.
HewaseducatedatSelkirkgrammarschool,Loretto,andattheEdinburghAcademy,StAndrewsUniversityandatBalliolCollege,Oxford,wherehetookafirstclassinthefinalclassicalschoolsin1868,becomingafellowandsubsequentlyhonoraryfellowofMertonCollege.Asajournalist,poet,criticandhistorian,hesoonmadeareputationasoneofthemostableandversatilewritersoftheday.
HediedofanginapectorisattheTor-na-CoilleHotelinBanchory,Banchory,survivedbyhiswife.HewasburiedinthecathedralprecinctsatStAndrews.

Langisnowchieflyknownforhispublicationsonfolklore,mythology,andreligion.TheearliestofhispublicationsisCustomandMyth(1884).InMyth,RitualandReligion(1887)heexplainedthe"irrational"elementsofmythologyassurvivalsfrommoreprimitiveforms.Lang'sMakingofReligionwasheavilyinfluencedbythe18thcenturyideaofthe"noblesavage":
init,hemaintainedtheexistenceofhighspiritualideasamongso-called"savage"races,drawingparallelswiththecontemporaryinterestinoccultphenomenainEngland.HisBlueFairyBook(1889)wasabeautifullyproducedandillustratededitionoffairytalesthathasbecomeaclassic.Thiswasfollowedbymanyothercollectionsoffairytales,collectivelyknownasAndrewLang'sFairyBooks.LangexaminedtheoriginsoftotemisminSocialOrigins(1903).

HealsowrotemonographsonThePortraitsandJewelsofMaryStuart(1906)andJamesVIandtheGowrieMystery(1902).ThesomewhatunfavourableviewofJohnKnoxpresentedinhisbookJohnKnoxandtheReformation(1905)arousedconsiderablecontroversy.HegavenewinformationaboutthecontinentalcareeroftheYoungPretenderinPickletheSpy(1897),anaccountofAlestairRuadhMacDonnell,whomheidentifiedwithPickle,anotoriousHanoverianspy.ThiswasfollowedbyTheCompanionsofPickle(1898)andamonographonPrinceCharlesEdward(1900).In1900hebeganaHistoryofScotlandfromtheRomanOccupation(1900).TheValet'sTragedy(1903),whichtakesitstitlefromanessayonDumas'sManintheIronMask,collectstwelvepapersonhistoricalmysteries,andAMonkofFife(1896)isafictitiousnarrativepurportingtobewrittenbyayoungScotinFrancein1429-1431.
