In1924jazzmusicianandorchestraleaderPaulWhitemandecidedtoorganizeaspecialconcerttoshowthatjazzwasseriousmusic.Gershwinagreedtocomposesomethingfortheconcertbeforeherealizedhehadjustafewweekstodoit.Andinthatshorttime,hecomposedapieceforpianoandorchestrawhichhecalledRhapsodyinBlue.Gershwinhimselfplayedthepianoattheconcert.Theaudiencewerethrilledwhentheyheardhismusic.Itmadehimworldfamousandshowedthatjazzmusiccouldbebothseriousandpopular.
In1928,GershwinwenttoParis.Heappliedtostudycomposition(作曲)withthewellknownmusicianNadiaBoulanger,butsherejectedhim.Shewasafraidthatclassicalstudywouldruinhisjazzinfluencedstyle.Whilethere,GershwinwroteAnAmericaninParis.Whenitwasfirstperformed,critics(评论家)weredividedoverthemusic.Somecalledithappyandfulloflife,toothersitwassillyandboring.ButitquicklybecamepopularinEuropeandtheUnitedStates.Itstillremainsoneofhismostfamousworks.
