摘要
教会学生怎样阅读和提高学生的阅读能力是我们英语教学中最重要的任务之一。
但目前的情况并不能如我们所愿。
影响阅读教学主要有三个方面的因素:
学生自身因素,学校因素和教师因素。
为了把阅读教学搞好,我们需要一个正确的理论指导和艰苦努力的工作。
本文主要谈论几种流行的的阅读教学理论,并且阐述了我在阅读教学实践中的几个观点和我所采取的提高学生阅读能力的几个措施。

Abstract
Teachingstudentshowtoreadandimprovingstudents’readingabilityareofthemostimportanttasksinourEnglishteaching.Butthepresentsituationisfarfromsatisfactory.Themainfactorsinfluencingreadingteachingare:

Introduction
Peopleincludingteachersandstudentsbegintorealizethatreadingcomprehensionisbecomingmoreandmoreimportantinmiddleschoolteaching.
First,middleschoolperiodisthebesttimeforstudentstolearnaforeignlanguage.Asweknow,thisperiodlastsaslongassixyears.ThemainknowledgeofEnglishcanbelearnedduringthoseyears.Andwecanalsounderstandaforeignculture.
AndthemostimportantisthatEnglishisawindowtothewideworldforourstudents.Goodhabitsofreadingareveryhelpfulfortheirfuturelife.Asweknow,inthemodernsociety,learningisataskthatapersonmustdothroughhislife.Largeamountofinformationandalotofneededknowledgeandtechniquesaregotbyreading.
Sowemustpaymuchattentiontoourreadingteaching.
Butwhatistheactualsituationlike?
Wehavetoadmitthatthesituationisfarfromsatisfactoryandwedidalotofuselesswork.Muchtimehasbeenwastedbutlittleachievementhasbeenmade.Ourstudentsdon’tlikereadingEnglishatall,sotheygetlowmarksintheexamination.Why?
Wedoworkhard,thenwhatisthematter?
Ithinkthemainreasonisthatsomeofourmethodsarenotrightorevenwehavenomethodatall.Ourteachingshouldbeguidedbyacertaintheory.Thenwhatisit?
Thisarticleaimsatanalyzingsomecommonviewsinourteachingandtryingtofindsomegoodwaystoimprovethestudents’readingability.
ChapterITheMainFactorsAffectingReadingTeaching
1.Thefactorofschool
Insomeschools,therearenoreadinglessonsatall.Readingisconsideredtobeanindependentactivityapartfromtheotherthreeabilities-listening,speakingandwriting.Insomeseniormiddleschools,especiallyinthecountryside,thehardwaresaretoopoor,thereare
notreadingroomsandtheycan’tgivestudentsanyreadingbooks,butothersaredifferent.Toimprovestudents’listening,therearemanymeasures,suchasEnglishcorner,allkindsoforalclasses,andsoon;toimprovetheirwriting,thereareopenwritinglessons.Fromthiswecansee,theschoolsdon’tattachimportancetothereadinglessons.Whydomuchworkaboutthem?
Butdolittleworkaboutreading.Theconditionsofschoolareveryimportanttothereadingteaching.“Readingisalsoabasicintelligencetechnicalability.Itismadeupofaseriesofbehaviorsandprocesses.”①Sotheschoolshouldchangethemind,andpaymoreattentiontothereadinglessons.
2.Thefactorofteachers
Inourteaching,theteachersareasguiders.Theyguidestudentshowtostudyevenhowtobemen.Theyaresoimportant,soasteacherswemusthaverightmind.Butinfact,someteachers’minddoesn’tsuittheteaching.Especiallyinourreadingteaching:
1).Theshortcomingsofleastteachabletheory
Someteachershaveawrongopinioninreading.Accordingtoleastteachabletheory,theythinkreadingistheleastteachablefactorofthefourbasicabilities.Butinfact,thefourbasicabilities:
listening,reading,speakingandwritingaresupplyingeachotherandtheyinfluenceeachother.Tolearnalanguage,onemustdoalotofreading.Justthinkthisquestion:
Chineseisourmothertongue.Everyonearounduscanspeakitfluently,butwhatabouthisreading?
Manypeopleevendon’thavethehabitofreading.Sotheycanonlyspeak,buttheirwritingisnotverygood.Ithinkteachersshouldbeblamedforthissituation.Teachersshouldhelpstudentsformthegoodhabitofreadingbecauseinthefuturesociety,ourstudentshavetolearnmuchmoreknowledgeafterleavingschoolandreadingisamainwaytogetinformation.Nowthatreadingisakindofability,itcanbetaughtinacertainwayanditmustbetaughtwell.Thechangeofourmindisveryimportant.
2).Theshortcomingsofencodinganddecodingtheory
Someteachersordertheirstudentstorememberwordsandphrasesasmanyaspossiblebecausetheyholdtheviewthatifastudentcanmastermorewords,hewillfeelreadingisveryeasy.Intheiropinion,readingisactuallyacourseofunderstandingeachwordandsentenceonebyone.Thefamouslinguist,ChristineNuttallonceheldthisview.“Whenawriterwantstowriteanarticle,heencodeshisinformationandfinishesit.Whenareaderreadsanarticle,heactuallydecodesthewriter’sinformation.Sowritingisaprocessofencoding,andreadingisaprocessofdecoding.”②Manyteachersareusingthistheorytoguidetheirreadingteaching.Theyoftensaytotheirstudents,“Keeprememberingmorewords.Themorewordsyoucanmaster,theeasierreadingcomprehensionis.Andyoucangetgoodmarksintheexams.”③Butinfact,manystudentsexpresstheirdifficultyinreading.
Ofcourse,itisveryimportantforourstudentstomasteralotofwordsandphrases.ButitisimpossibleforthemtorememberallwordsinEnglishandintheexaminations,itiscertainthattheywillmeetsomenewwordsthattheyhaveneverseenbefore.Soknowingeverywordisnotenoughforourreadingteaching.Becauseunderstandinganarticlemeansnotonlyunderstandingwords,butalsograspingitsgeneralidea.Inthereadingprocess,therearesomeotherfactorsaffectingourunderstanding.
Accordingtomyactualreadingteachingexperience,ifyouwantyourstudents’readingabilitiestobeimprovedyoushouldaskyourstudentstodolikefollowing:
(1)Helpstudentsmakeagoodreadinghabit.
(2)Beforereading,providesomebackgroundknowledge,culturalknowledgeorsomethingrelatedtoreadingmaterialsforstudents.
(3)Analysessentencestructurecorrectlyandknowthespecialmeaningaccordingtoitstextualenvironment.
(4)Readingisnotapassiveprocessbutapositiveone.Sothereader’sknowledgestructureisveryimportant.
(5)Widereading.
Fromtheaboveexplanations,weknowthatmanyfactorsmayaffectourreadingcomprehension.Buttheteachersareinfluencedbythetheories,theydon’tpayenoughattentiontothem.Sothechangeofourmindisnecessary.
3.Thefactorofstudents
Inourteaching,thestudentsareasimportantasteachers.Theteachersareguidesandthestudentsareobjectsofteaching.Thetwopartsaren’tapart,theyinfluenceeachother.So,intheteaching,thestudents’functionshouldn’tbeignored.Butsomestudentsdon’tunderstandourteaching,andtheyhavewrongmindinstudying.Forexample,somestudentsthinkthatlisteningisimportant,sotheylistentoEnglishtapes,EnglishsongsevenwatchEnglishmoviesinorafterclasstoimprovetheirlistening.Somestudentsthinktheydon’tdowellinspeaking,theytakepartinEnglishcorner.Andsomestudentsthinktheymustimprovetheirwriting,theytrytowritearticleseveryday,evenmakeaforeignpenpal.Theydosomuchaboutthem,butfewstudentspaymoreattentiontoreading.Theydon’tthinkanywaystoimprovetheirreading,becausetheythinkit’seasytoread,onlyneedtomastermorewordsandphrases.Butthefactisthat?
No,wehearsomestudentscomplain“Weknowmostofthewordsinthearticle,butwhatdoesthewriterwantstotellusonearth?
”Whydotheyhavesuchproblems?
