andshoutsandlonelycriesanddirepicturesofhell,andthenhe
sangasongabouttheninetyandninesafeinthefold,butonelittle
lambwasleftoutinthecold.Thenhesaid:

Youknowyouhavetoread“betweenthelines”togetthemost
outofanything.Iwanttopersuadeyoutodosomethingequally
importantinthecourseofyourreading.Iwanttopersuadeyou
to“writebetweenthelines”.Unlessyoudo,youarenotlikelytodo
themostefficientkindofreading.
Icontend,quitebluntly,thatmarkingupabookisnotanactof
mutilationbutoflove.
Therearetwowaysinwhichonecanownabook.Thefirstisthe
propertyrightyouestablishbypayingforit,justasyoupayfor
clothesandfurniture.Butthisactofpurchaseisonlythepreludeto
possession.Fullownershipcomesonlywhenyouhavemadeita
