Forthepastfewdays,allofushavebeenfocusedononeoftheworststormsinourlifetime. AndeverybodyinOhioobviouslyhasbeenwatchingtheimagesonTV. Wearesosaddenedbythosewholosttheirlives. Wecanonlyimaginewhattheirfamiliesaregoingthrough,andourthoughtsandprayersarewiththem.
Ihadacallthismorningwithmyemergencyteams,andoneofthethingsthatI'veemphasizedtoeverybodyontheEastCoast--peopleallaroundthecountrywanttosendamessage,andthatiswewillstandwithfolksinNewYorkandNewJerseyandConnecticuteverystepofthewayuntiltheyhavefullyrecovered. (Applause.) That'sacommitmentwe'remakingtothem.
WhenImakethosecommitments,Idon'tmakethosecommitmentsjustasPresident. ImakethosecommitmentsonbehalfoftheAmericanpeople. (Applause.) Andwhat’sinterestingis,duringthesekindsofcrises,thesedisasters,astoughasitisandassadasitis,we'realsoinspiredbecauseweseeheroesrunningintobuildingsandwadingthroughwatertosavetheirfellowcitizens. Weseeneighborshelpingneighborscopewithtragedy. Weseeleadersofdifferentpartiesworkingtofixwhat’sbroken,nottoscorepoliticalpoints. Weseeaspiritthatsaysnomatterhowbadastormis,nomatterhowtoughtimesare,we’regoingtomakeitbecausewe'reallinthistogether. (Applause.) Weriseorfallasonenationandasonepeople. (Applause.)
Andthatspirit,Ohio,hasguidedthiscountryalongitsimprobablejourneyformorethantwocenturies. Andit’salsoguidedusandcarriedusthroughthetrialsandtribulationsofthelastfouryears.
In2008,wewereinthemiddleoftwowarsandtheworsteconomiccrisissincetheGreatDepression. Today,ourbusinesseshavecreatednearly5.5millionnewjobs--andthismorning,welearnedthatcompanieshiredmoreworkersinOctoberthanatanytimeinthelasteightmonths. (Applause.)
TheAmericanautoindustryisbackontop. (Applause.) Homevalues,housingstartsareontherise. We’relessdependentonforeignoilthananytimeinthelast20years. Becauseoftheserviceandsacrificeofourbravemenandwomeninuniform,thewarinIraqisover. ThewarinAfghanistanisending. AlQaedahasbeendecimated. OsamabinLadenisdead. (Applause.)
Sowe'reonthemove,Ohio. (Applause.) We’vemaderealprogressthesepastfouryears. Butthereasonallofyouareheretoday,thereasonI'mheretoday,isbecauseweknowwe’vegotmoreworktodo. Aslongasthere’sasingleAmericanwhowantsajobbutcan’tfindone,ourworkisnotdone. Aslongastherearefamiliesworkingharderbutfallingbehind,aslongasthere’sachildanywhereinthiscountrywhoislanguishinginpoverty,barredfromopportunity,ourfightgoeson. Wearenotfinishedyet. We’vegotmoreworktodo. (Applause.)
We'reherebecauseweunderstandthisnationcannotsucceedwithoutagrowing,thrivingmiddleclass–(applause)--withoutsturdyladdersforfolkswhoarewillinghardtogetintothemiddleclass. (Applause.) OurfightgoesonbecauseAmericahasalwaysdonebestwheneverybodyisgettingafairshot,andeverybodyisdoingtheirfairshare,andeverybodyplaysbythesamerules. That’swhatwebelieve. That’swhatyoubelieve. Now,infourdays,Springfield,fourdays--(applause)--justfour--fourdaysforfouryears. (Applause.)Infourdays,you’vegotachoicetomake--it’snotjustachoicebetweentwopartiesortwocandidates. It’sachoicebetweentwodifferentvisionsforAmerica. (Applause.) It’sachoicebetweengoingbacktothetop-downpoliciesthatgotusintothismess--orthemiddle-out,bottom-upstrategiesthathavegottenusoutofthismessandaregoingtokeepusgoing. (Applause.)
AsAmericans,webelieveinfreeenterprise,andwebelieveinthestriversandthedreamersandtherisk-takerswhoarethedrivingforcebehindoureconomy. That'showwecreategrowthandprosperity,thegreatesttheworldhaseverknown. Butwealsobelievethatoureconomydoesbetter,ourbusinessesdobetter,ourentrepreneursdobetterwheneverybodyhasgotachancetosucceed;whenallourchildrenaregettingadecenteducation;whenallourworkersarelearningnewskills;whenwesupportresearchinmedicalbreakthroughsandnewtechnologies.
WebelieveAmericaisstrongerwheneverybodycancountonaffordablehealthinsuranceandMedicareandSocialSecurity--(applause)--whenourkidsareprotectedfromtoxicdumpingandpollution;whenourconsumersaren'tbeingtakenadvantageofbycreditcardcompaniesormortgagelenders. (Applause.)
Webelieveinademocracywhereeverybody’svoiceisheard,whereyoujustcan'tbuyanelection. (Applause.) Andwebelieveinpoliticiansthatunderstandthatthere’ssomethingstheAmericanpeoplecandobetterforthemselves--forexample,thatpoliticiansinWashington,mostlymen,shouldn’tbecontrollinghealthcarechoicesthatwomencanmakeperfectlywellforthemselves. Foreightyears,wehadaPresidentwhosharedthesebeliefs--aguynamedBillClinton. (Applause.) Andsoourbeliefswereputtothetest. HiseconomicplanaskedthewealthiestAmericanstopayalittlebitmoresowecouldcontinuetoinvestinourpeople,continuetoinvestinideasandinnovation,investinourinfrastructure. AndatthetimetheRepublicanCongressandaSenatecandidatebythenameofMittRomney--

Votingisthebestrevenge.
ButatthetimeMittRomneysaidBillClinton’splanwouldhurttheeconomyandkilljobs,itturnsouthismathbackthenwasjustasbadasitistoday. (Applause.) BecausebytheendofPresidentClinton’ssecondterm,Americahadcreated23millionnewjobs,andincomeswereupandpovertywasdown,andourdeficitbecamethebiggestsurplusinhistory. Soourideasweretriedandtested,andtheyworked. Theirideaswerealsotried,andtheydidn’tworkoutsowell.
Becauseremember,intheeightyearsafterBillClintonleftoffice,theytriedthistop-downeconomics,theytriedthis“you’reonyourown”economics. WetriedgivingbigtaxcutstothewealthiestAmericans. WetriedgivinginsurancecompaniesandoilcompaniesandbigWallStreetbanksafreelicensetodowhatevertheypleased. Wetriedit. Andwhatdidweget?
Wegotfallingincomes,recorddeficits,theslowestjobgrowthinhalfacentury,andweendedupwithaneconomiccrisisthatwe’vebeencleaningupaftereversince. (Applause.)
Sowetriedourideas--theyworked. Wetriedtheirideas--didn’twork. Now,GovernorRomney,he’saverygiftedsalesman. Sohe’sbeentryinginthiscampaign,ashardashecan,torepackagetheseideasthatdidn’twork,theverysamepoliciesthatdidnotwork,andhe’stryingtopretendthatthey’rechange. Haveyouheardhim?
He’sgoingaroundsaying,I’mthecandidateofchange. Except,whenyoulookatthepolicies,they’rethesameonesthatdidn’twork.
Now,thethingis,weknowwhatchangelookslike,andwhathe’ssellingain’tit. (Applause.) Givingmorepowertothebiggestbanks--that'snotchange. Another$5trilliontaxcutthatfavorsthewealthyisnotchange. Refusingtoanswerquestionsaboutthedetailsofyourpoliciesuntilaftertheelection--notchange.
Rulingoutcompromise,pledgingtorubber-stamptheteapartyagendainCongress--that'snotchange. That’sexactlywhatweneedtochange. Kindofmassagingthefactswhenthey’reinconvenienttoyourcampaign--that'sdefinitelynotchange. That’stheoldesttrickinthebook.
That’swhatGovernorRomneyhasbeendoingtheselastfewweeks. You’vebeenseeingit. RighthereinOhio,folkswhoworkattheJeepplanthavebeenhavingtocalluptheiremployersbecausethey’reworried;they’reaskingiftheirjobsarebeingshippedtoChina. Andthereasonthey'reworriedisbecausetheysawadsrunbyGovernorRomneysayingJeepplantsweregoingtobeshippingjobstoChina. Ofcourse,itturnsoutit’snottrue. ThecarcompaniesthemselveshavetoldGovernorRomneytoknockitoff. Knockitoff. That’swhattheysaid. (Applause.)
GM--GeneralMotorssaid,wethinkcreatingjobsintheUnitedStatesshouldbeasourceofbipartisanpride. That’swhattheysaid,andthey’reright. Icouldn’tagreemore.
AndIunderstandGovernorRomneyhasatoughtimehereinOhiobecausehewasagainstsavingtheautoindustry. AndtheautoindustryaccountsforoneoutofeightjobshereinOhio. SoIgetthatit’saproblemforhim.
