Correlationalvs.experimentalresearch.Mostempiricalresearchbelongsclearlytooneofthosetwogeneralcategories.Incorrelationalresearchwedonot(oratleasttrynotto)influenceanyvariablesbutonlymeasurethemandlookforrelations(correlations)betweensomesetofvariables,suchasbloodpressureandcholesterollevel.Inexperimentalresearch,wemanipulatesomevariablesandthenmeasuretheeffectsofthismanipulationonothervariables;forexample,aresearchermightartificiallyincreasebloodpressureandthenrecordcholesterollevel.Dataanalysisinexperimentalresearchalsocomesdowntocalculating"correlations"betweenvariables,specifically,thosemanipulatedandthoseaffectedbythemanipulation.However,experimentaldatamaypotentiallyprovidequalitativelybetterinformation:

Dependentvs.independentvariables.Independentvariablesarethosethataremanipulatedwhereasdependentvariablesareonlymeasuredorregistered.Thisdistinctionappearsterminologicallyconfusingtomanybecause,assomestudentssay,"allvariablesdependonsomething."However,onceyougetusedtothisdistinction,itbecomesindispensable.Thetermsdependentandindependentvariableapplymostlytoexperimentalresearchwheresomevariablesaremanipulated,andinthissensetheyare"independent"fromtheinitialreactionpatterns,features,intentions,etc.ofthesubjects.Someothervariablesareexpectedtobe"dependent"onthemanipulationorexperimentalconditions.Thatistosay,theydependon"whatthesubjectwilldo"inresponse.Somewhatcontrarytothenatureofthisdistinction,thesetermsarealsousedinstudieswherewedonotliterallymanipulateindependentvariables,butonlyassignsubjectsto"experimentalgroups"basedonsomepre-existingpropertiesofthesubjects.Forexample,ifinanexperiment,malesarecomparedwithfemalesregardingtheirwhitecellcount(WCC),GendercouldbecalledtheindependentvariableandWCCthedependentvariable.

Measurementscales.Variablesdifferin"howwell"theycanbemeasured,i.e.,inhowmuchmeasurableinformationtheirmeasurementscalecanprovide.Thereisobviouslysomemeasurementerrorinvolvedineverymeasurement,whichdeterminesthe"amountofinformation"thatwecanobtain.Anotherfactorthatdeterminestheamountofinformationthatcanbeprovidedbyavariableisits"typeofmeasurementscale."Specificallyvariablesareclassifiedas(a)nominal,(b)ordinal,(c)intervalor(d)ratio.
a.Nominalvariablesallowforonlyqualitativeclassification.Thatis,theycanbemeasuredonlyintermsofwhethertheindividualitemsbelongtosomedistinctivelydifferentcategories,butwecannotquantifyorevenrankorderthosecategories.Forexample,allwecansayisthat2individualsaredifferentintermsofvariableA(e.g.,theyareofdifferentrace),butwecannotsaywhichone"hasmore"ofthequalityrepresentedbythevariable.Typicalexamplesofnominalvariablesaregender,race,color,city,etc.
b.Ordinalvariablesallowustorankordertheitemswemeasureintermsofwhichhaslessandwhichhasmoreofthequalityrepresentedbythevariable,butstilltheydonotallowustosay"howmuchmore."Atypicalexampleofanordinalvariableisthesocioeconomicstatusoffamilies.Forexample,weknowthatupper-middleishigherthanmiddlebutwecannotsaythatitis,forexample,18%higher.Alsothisverydistinctionbetweennominal,ordinal,andintervalscalesitselfrepresentsagoodexampleofanordinalvariable.Forexample,wecansaythatnominalmeasurementprovideslessinformationthanordinalmeasurement,butwecannotsay"howmuchless"orhowthisdifferencecomparestothedifferencebetweenordinalandintervalscales.
C.Intervalvariablesallowusnotonlytorankordertheitemsthataremeasured,butalsotoquantifyandcomparethesizesofdifferencesbetweenthem.Forexample,temperature,asmeasuredindegreesFahrenheitorCelsius,constitutesanintervalscale.Wecansaythatatemperatureof40degreesishigherthanatemperatureof30degrees,andthatanincreasefrom20to40degreesistwiceasmuchasanincreasefrom30to40degrees.
DRatiovariablesareverysimilartointervalvariables;inadditiontoallthepropertiesofintervalvariables,theyfeatureanidentifiableabsolutezeropoint,thustheyallowforstatementssuchasxistwotimesmorethany.Typicalexamplesofratioscalesaremeasuresoftimeorspace.Forexample,astheKelvintemperaturescaleisaratioscale,notonlycanwesaythatatemperatureof200degreesishigherthanoneof100degrees,wecancorrectlystatethatitistwiceashigh.Intervalscalesdonothavetheratioproperty.Moststatisticaldataanalysisproceduresdonotdistinguishbetweentheintervalandratiopropertiesofthemeasurementscales.
