“Foreveryspecies,thereisoneortwospeciesdecliningandothersthatarenotmovingatall,”saysKerr.Thisshifthasalsobeenobservedinotherspecies,suchasbutterflies.Butduetoanewcause—theriseoftemperaturesinsteadoftotalpesticideuse,achangeinlanduseorparasites,bumblebees—unlikebutterflies—havefailedtoextendthenorthernboundariesoftheirrangesintotheterritorythatisnowhabitableforthem,sobumblebeespeciesacrossEuropeandNorthAmericaaredecliningrapidly,thelateststudyledbyKerr’steamfinds.“Ourdatasuggeststhatthenewfactorplaysaleading,orperhapstheleading,roleinthistrend,”saysKerr.
“Thisstudyshowsthatafourthfactorisalsobeginningtoaffectit.Itislikelythatthebinedstressesfromallofthesepressureswillhavedestructiveimpactsonbumblebeesinthenottoodistantfuture,”saysDaveGoulson,abeeresearcherattheUniversityofSussex,Brighton,UK.
