In1927,whenMandelawasnine,hedecidedtobecomealawyer,influencedbythecasesthatcameonhisfather.In1942MandelaenteredpoliticsbyjoiningtheAfricanNationalCongress(ANC),SouthAfrica'smajorliberationmovementandtodaythecountry'srulingparty.ItwasduringthistimethatheandasmallgroupofmainlyyoungmembersoftheANCgotdowntoatasktransformingthepartyintoamassmovement.
In1952,hewaschargedandbroughttotrialforhisroleinthecampaignoffightingagainstUnjustLawsandgivenaprisonsentence.The1950sturnedouttobeatimeofhardshipandsufferingforMandela--hewasbanned,arrestedandimprisoned.
Whileinprison,MandelastudiedbycorrespondencewiththeUniversityofLondon,earningaBachelorofLawdegree.Heneverfacedhisteachers,buthisnamewasfamiliartoalltheteachersbymeansofhiswritingletters.
Afterspending27yearsinprison,MandelabecameSouthAfrica'sfirstdemocraticallyelectedpresidentin1994.Heunitedafearfulcountry,bringingtogetherblacksandwhitesinharmony,whenSouthAfricawaslivingthroughviolentandtroubledtimes.Afterservingafive-yeartermaspresidentofthecountry,heretiredfrompubliclife,thoughnotfromthepubliceye.
Heisthegreatestsonofthenationandagreatfatherofhispeople.Morethanl,115awardsandhonors,eventheNobelPeacePrizehadbeenonhim.Morethan85streets,roads,avenues,bridges,highwayshadbeennamedafterMandela.
