1.Thishazardmanagementprocedure hasbeendevelopedbyTheAustralianNationalUniversityto ensurethesafeandreliablemanagementofchemicalswithintheUniversity.InmanagingchemicalstheUniversityadvocatesariskmanagementapproachtominimisetheriskstostaff,students,contractorsandvisitorsinrelationtothepurchase,storage,handlinganddisposalofchemicalmaterialsassociatedwithintherangeofresearch,teachingandoperationaltasksundertakenwithintheUniversity.

ArchivedChemical–Aresearchsubstancethatisstoredformorethanoneweekinanamountgreaterthan1gor1mL.Whereappropriate,itshouldalsoapplytoamountslessthan1gor1mL.
Control–Anythingthatisimplementedtoeliminateorreducetheriskofahazard.
EmergencyProcedures-Basicplans,establishedinadvance,statingwhatactiontotakeintheeventofanemergency.Theseareusedinordertominimisetheconsequencesofanincident,suchasinjuries,ordamagetopropertyortheenvironment.
Exposure–Occurswhenaperson,propertyortheenvironmentcomesintocontactwithahazard.Thefourroutesofexposureforpeopleare:
inhalation,skinabsorption,ingestionandinoculation.
Hazard–Anythingthathasthepotentialtocauseharm(e.g.hydrochloricacidishazardousbecauseofitscorrosivenatureandabilitytocauseburnstolivingtissues).
HazardousChemical–Anychemicalsubstancethathastheabilitytoreleaseenergythatisharmfultothehealthorsafetyofapersonortheenvironment.Thisdefinitionincludeshazardoussubstances,dangerousgoods,andscheduleddrugsandpoisons.
Health-Freedomfromillnessordisease.
HealthHazard–Anythingthatcancauseillnessordisease.Exposuremayoccuroverashortorlongperiodoftime.
MaterialSafetyDataSheet–SeeSafetyDataSheet.
OccupationalHealthandSafety-Freedomfrominjury,illnessanddiseaseintheworkplace.
ResearchSubstance–Asubstancethatisanewchemical,orwherethereislittleknownaboutitsphysical,chemical,toxicologicalorhealth-relatedproperties.
Risk–Thelikelihoodthatahazardwillcauseharminthegivencircumstances(e.g.theriskofreceivingaburnfromhydrochloricacidislowwhenitiscontainedinasealedbottle;however,thisriskissignificantlyhigherwhenhandlinganacidinanopencontainer).
Safety-Freedomfromdangerofinjury.
SafetyDataSheet–Adocumentthatisdesignedtoprovidetheinformationnecessarytostoreandhandlehazardouschemicalssafely.Thesedocumentsareproducedbythemanufacturerorimporterofeachhazardouschemical.
SafeWorkMethods-Asetofinstructionsdesignedtocommunicatedefiniteorstandardizedprocedurestostaff.Theseareusedtoobtainconsistencyinresultsandincreasesafetyandefficiencyintheworkplace.AlsoknownasSafeOperatingProcedures,Protocolsetc.
