JaneAusten(16December1775–18July1817)wasanEnglishnovelistAustenlivedthelowerfringesoftheEnglishlandedgentry.Shewaseducatedprimarilybyreading.Herartisticapprenticeshiplastedfromabandoned,andwroteandextensivelyrevisedthreemajornovelsandbeganafourth.From1811until1816,withthereleaseofSenseandSensibility(1811),PrideandPrejudice(1813),MansfieldPark(1814)andEmma(1815),Herworks,thoughusuallypopular,werefirstpublishedanonymouslyandbroughtandmanufacturers,whichthroughtheprofessionstothelowerranksofthelandedgentry.[CassandrawasamemberoftheprominentLeighfamily.Austen'

2.1TheHistoricalBackground
ItwasbetweeneighteenthcenturyandnineteenthcenturythatthesocietywhereJaneAustenlivedchangeddramatically.Attheendofeighteenthcentury,
TheFrenchbourgeoisrevolutionshockedthewholeEuropeancontinent.In1805,TheBritishnavydefeatedtheFrenchandSpanishfleets.Sincethen,
Capitalistsexpandedcolonieswantonly.Since1930s,Britishindustrial
capitalismreplacedthoroughlydominationofthelandednobilities,which
becametocontrolthecountry'
seconomicalandpoliticalmainpower.In1832,ParliamentaryreformmarkstheBritishIndustrialvictoryofbourgeois.TheworksofJaneAustenreflectthethreefactorsinthechangeoftimes:

JaneAusteniscalledCenturyStarsatDawn,atthattime,shewroteballs,conversationsandmarriageorloveinsteadofsocialnewimportantthings,whichbroughtmuchcriticismfromcritics.Becauseofthisreason,PrideandPrejudicecomeintobeing.Fromthenovel,wecanfindthatJaneAustenpreferthelifeofthelandednobilities.AllofthesepavedthewayforJaneAusten’sandDarcy’sprideandprejudice.
FromtheperspectiveofthefallofthepatriarchalsocietyasapartoffindElizabethBennet’salldaughterswereworklessandtheywerealwaysatinheritedall,womeninheritednothing.Asaresultofthetwofactors,womenattachedcompletelythemselvestomen.Mrs.BennetteversaidthatTherichbachelorswhoevercoulddowastotry,certaineconomicbasis.JaneAustenwhowasinfluencedandrestrictedbyexperienceswasfondofrurallifeandoldsocialstructure.Thelandlordandcountrygentlemanappearedinthenovelasaowerwhomaintainedoldfeudalpastoralsystem.Darcywasatypicalrepresentative.Nomatterwhereatpeopleasarepresentativeofalandlordandacountrygentleman.
FromtheperspectiveofThemodificationofreligiousbelief,betweensixteenthcenturyandeighteenthcentury,Britishreligiousfaithchangedalot.Asaresultofthat,TheBritisharistocracyclaimkinshipwithBritisharistocracy.Darcywasaaristocrat.However,Elizabethwasaruralgirl.Therewasnopossibilityforthemtogetmarried.So,whentheymeteachother,theymustbepride,prejudicewitheachother.Bothofthemwantedtoself-esteem.Byanalysingthis,wefinditiseasytounderstandalloftheseprideandprejudice.
2.2Morality
AtthetimewhenJaneAustenlivedandwrote,mannersplayedaveryimportantroleinfamilyandsociallife.Mannersdependedonitsownproperty,whichdroveMoralityorpromotedMoralityordestroyedMorality.JaneAustenpresentedthesocialcustompictureofThenobilityandthecountrygentleman’smannersthroughthenovelinordertopresenttheirsocialcorevalueandthemoralcodeofconduct.IntheworldofPrideandPrejudice,TheBennettfamilyisanotablefamily.ThevulgarofMrs.Bennettandspeechanddeportment,EspeciallyintheNetherfieldball,drawonDarcy’sdespising.DarcylookeddownuponThemiddleclassfortheirarrogantmanners,especiallythearrogancetoElizabeth,whichviolatedgentlemanlinessthatapersonshouldrespectothers.TheRudeandtheunreasonablefromElizabethviolatedconductstandardofaLady.Moralityisastimuluswhichdrovepeopletodowhattheyshoulddoaccordingtomoralstandardinspiteoftheirrealfeelings,forexample,DarcylovedElizabeth.Butmoralstandard.thisrestrictedtheirfeels.Asaresult,DarcywaspridetoElizabeth.ElizabethwasprejudicetoDarcy.
2.3Wealth
