Imademistakesinthisregardandeventuallylearnedthat,toachievesuccess,schoolmustalwaysbeplaced
aboveotherthings.
Inmycollegeexperience,Ihaveobservedandlearnedhowtoachievesuccess.Iwishsomeonehadtold
meearliertheimportanceofhavingthatsmartclassroomconduct,offullyutilizingtheschoolresources,and
ofmakingcollegemytoppriority.Then,mycollegebeginningswouldnothavebeensorockyandtough.

Smell
Smell,asameansofnonverbalcommunication,isimportant.Odorcommunicatesnotonlywhenweare

culturesmayhavedifferentattitudestowardbodyodors.
MostpeopleintheWestrespondnegativelytowhattheyconsiderbadodorssuchasbodyodor,breath

viewthosewithbodyodorasdirtyandunsanitary.However,peopleusuallyarenotcomfortablein
discussingthetopic,andgenerallywillnottellanotherthathisorherbodyodorisoffensive.Theywill
simplyavoidbeingclosetothepersonandwillendtheconversationasquicklyaspossible.
Othercultureshavequitedifferentconceptsofnaturalodors;
theyconsiderthemasnormalandbelieve
thatitisanactoffriendshipto“breathethebreath”ofthepersonwithwhomtheyconverseandtofeeltheir
presencebysmelling.Forexample,Arabsdon’tseemtofeelcomfortableunlesstheycansmelleachother.

Philippinestotradesmallpiecesofclothingonpartingsothatthesmelloftheotherpersonwillevoketheir
affectionforeachother.
Notknowingculturalvariationsinattitudetowardsmellcancreateuncertaintyandevenillfeeling.For
example,amedicaldoctorfromSaudiArabiaonceworkedinahospitalinthesouthernUnitedStates.
ProblemsarosewhenpatientsrefusedtohavetheSaudidoctorexaminethem.Interviewswithpatients
revealedtwoproblems:
He“smelledbad”andhebreathedonthepatients.Thedoctor’straininghad
apparentlyfailedtoincludethedifferencebetweenArabicandAmericanattitudesandpracticesrelatingto
smell.Clearly,encountersbetweenpeoplewithsuchwidelydifferingattitudescouldleadtoserious
miscommunication.Tomaintainharmoniousinterculturalbusinessrelationships,oneshouldremember
thesediverseattitudestowardsmell.
