Aninformationsystemhasfiveparts:
people,procedures,software,hardware,anddata.
Whenyouthinkofamicrocomputer,perhapsyouthinkofjusttheequipmentitself.Thatis,youthinkofthemonitororthekeyboard.Thereismoretoitthanthat.Thewaytothinkaboutamicrocomputerisaspartofaninformationsystem.Aninformationsystemhasfiveparts:
(1)People:
Itiseasytooverlookpeopleasoneofthefivepartsofamicrocomputersystem.Yetthatiswhatmicrocomputersareallabout—makingpeople,anduserslikeyourself,moreproductive.
(2)Procedures:
Proceduresarerulesorguidelinesforpeopletofollowwhenusingsoftware,hardware,anddata.Typically,theseproceduresaredocumentedinthemanualsinmanufactureswhichprovidewiththeirproducts.
(3)Software:
Softwareisanothernameforaprogram.Aprogramconsistsofthestep-by-stepinstructionsthattellthecomputerhowtodoitswork.Thepurposeofsoftwareistoconvertdata(unprocessedfacts)intoinformation(processedfacts).
(4)Hardware:
Thehardwareconsistsoftheequipment:
keyboard,mouse,monitor,systemunit,andotherdevices.Hardwareiscontrolledbysoftware.Itactuallyprocessesthedatatocreateinformation.
(5)Data:
Dataconsistsoftheraw,unprocessedfact,includingtext,numbers,images,andsounds.Examplesofrawfactsarethehoursyouworkandyourpayrate.Afterdataisprocessedthroughthecomputer,itisusuallycalledinformation.Anexampleofsuchinformationisthetotalwagesowedyouforaweek’swork.
Inlargecomputersystems,therearespecialistswhodealwithwritingprocedures,developingsoftware,andcapturingdata.Inmicrocomputersystems,however,endusersoftenperformtheseoperations.Tobeacompetentenduser,youmustunderstandtheessentialsofinformationtechnology(IT),includingsoftware,hardware,anddata.
Althougheasytooverlook,peoplearesurelythemostimportantpartofanyinformationsystem.Ourlivesaretouchedeverydaybycomputersandinformationsystems.ManytimesthecontactisdirectandobvioussuchaswhenwecreatedocumentsusingawordprocessingprogramorwhenweconnecttotheInternet.
Othertimes,thecontactisnotasobvious.Nonetheless,computersandinformationsystemstouchourliveshundredsoftimeseveryday.Considerjustthefollowingthreeexamples.
(1)Software.Softwareisoftwokinds:
systemsoftwareandapplicationsoftware.
Software,aswementioned,isanothernameforprograms.Programsaretheinstructionsthattellthecomputerhowtoprocessdataintotheformyouwant.Inmostcases,thewordssoftwareandprogramsareinterchangeable.
Therearetwomajorkindsofsoftware—systemssoftwareandapplicationsoftware.Youcanthinkofapplicationsoftwareasthekindyouuse.Thinkofsystemsoftwareasthekindthecomputeruses.
①Systemsoftware.Theuserinteractswithapplicationsoftware.Systemsoftwareenablestheapplicationsoftwaretointeractwiththecomputerhardware.Systemsoftwareis“background”softwarethathelpsthecomputermanageitsowninternalresources.
Themostimportantsystemsoftwareprogramistheoperatingsystem,whichinteractswiththeapplicationsoftwareandthecomputer.Theoperatingsystemhandlessuchdetailsasrunning(“executing”)programs,storingdataandprograms,andprocessingdata.Windows2000isoneofthebest-knownoperatingsystemsfortoday’smicrocomputerusers.
②Applicationsoftware.Applicationsoftwaremightbedescriedas“end-user”software.Applicationsoftwareperformsusefulworkongeneral-purposetaskssuchasworkprocessinganddataanalysis.
Therearecertaingeneral-purposeprogramsorbasicapplications.Theseprogramsarewidelyusedinnearlyallcareerareas.Theyarethekindofprogramsyouhavetoknowtobeconsideredcomputercompetent.Oneofthesebasicapplicationsisabrowsertonavigate,explore,andfindinformationontheinternet.ThetwomostwidelyusedbrowsersareMicrosoft’sInternetExplorerandNetscape’sNavigator.
Therearemanyotherapplicationsthataremorespecializedandwidelyusedwithincertaincareerareas.Theyarethekindofprogramsyoushouldknowtobetrulycomputercompetentinthefuture.Oneofthemostexcitingapplicationsismultimedia,whichallowsuserstointegratevideo,music,voice,andgraphicstocreateinteractivepresentations.
(2)Hardware.Hardwareforamicrocomputersystemconsistsofavarietyofdifferentdevices.Thisphysicalequipmentfallsintobasiccategories:
systemunit,input/output,secondarystorage,andcommunicationdevices.
①Systemunit:
Thesystemunitiselectroniccircuitryhousedwithinthecomputercabinet.Twoimportantcomponentsofthesystemunitarethemicroprocessorandmemory.Themicroprocessorcontrolsandmanipulatesdatatoproduceinformation.Memory,alsoknownasprimarystorageorrandomaccessmemory(RAM),holdsdataandprograminstructionsforprocessingthedata.Italsoholdstheprocessedinformationbeforeitisoutput.Memoryissometimesreferredtoastemporarystoragebecauseitscontentswilltypicallybelostiftheelectricalpowertothecomputerisdisrupted.
②Input/outputdevices:
Inputdevicestranslatedataandprogramsthathumanscanunderstandintoaformthatthecomputercanprocess.Themostcommoninputdevicesarethekeyboardandthemouse.Outputdevicestranslatetheprocessedinformationfromthecomputerintoaformthathumanscanunderstand.Themostcommonoutputdevicesaremonitorsandprinters.
③Secondarystoragedevices:
Unlikememory,secondarystoragedevicesholddataandprogramsevenafterelectricalpowertothecomputersystemhasbeenturnedoff.Themostimportantkindsofsecondarymediaarefloppy,hard,andopticaldisks.Floppydisksarewidelyusedtostoreandtransportdatafromonecomputertoanother.Theyarecalledfloppybecausedataisstoredonaverythinflexible,orfloppy,plasticdisk.Harddisksaretypicallyusedtostoreprogramsandverylargedatafiles.Usingarigidmetallicplatter,harddiskshaveamuchgreatercapacityandareabletoaccessinformationmuchfasterthanfloppydisks.Opticaldisksuselasertechnologyandhavethegreatestcapacity.Thetwobasictypesofopticaldisksarecompactdiscs(CDS)anddigitalversatile(orvideo)discs(DVDs).
④Communicationsdevices:
Communicationshardwaresendsandreceivesdataandprogramsfromonecomputerorsecondarystoragedevicetoanother.ManymicrocomputersuseamodemtoconvertelectronicsignalsfromthecomputerintoelectronicsignalsthatcantraveloveratelephonelineandontotheInternet.
(3)Data.Dataisstoreddocument,worksheet,database,andpresentationfiles.
Dataisusedtodescribefactsaboutsomething.Whenstoredelectronicallyinfiles,datacanbeuseddirectlyasfortheinformationsystem.
①documentfiles,createdwordprocessorstosavedocumentssuchasmemostermpapersandletters.
②Worksheetfiles,createdbyelectronicspreadsheetstoanalyzethingslikebudgetsandtopredictsales.
③Databasefiles,typicallycreatedbydatabasemanagementprogramstocontainhighlystructuredandorganizeddata.Forexample,anemployeedatabasefilemightcontainalltheworkers’names,socialsecuritynumbers,jobtitles,andotherrelatedpiecesofinformation.
④Presentationfiles,createdbypresentationgraphicsprogramstosavepresentationmaterials.Forexample,afilemightcontainaudiencehandouts,speakernotes,andelectronicslides.
第一单元信息系统
信息系统由五个部分组成:
人、程序、软件、硬件和数据。
当你在想到微机时,你可能只想到了设备本身。
也就是说,你想到的是显示器或是键盘。
其实,微机远不止这些。
应该把微机作为一个信息系统来考虑。
(1)人:
把人看作信息系统五个部分之一,一点也不过分。
因为微机可使操作者大大提高工作效率。
(2)程序:
人们使用软件、硬件和数据时可以遵循的规则或者指导方针。
大多数情况下,这些程序都在产品说明书中备有指导说明。
(3)软件:
是程序的另一个名字。
一个程序包括指导电脑工作的每一个步骤。
软件的用途是将数据(未被加工过的事物)转化成信息(加工过的事物)。
(4)硬件:
硬件所包含的设备有键盘、鼠标、显示器、系统单元和其他的设置。
硬件受软件控制,实际上就是处理数据并产生信息。
(5)数据:
数据由包括文本、数字、图像和声音的原始的、未被加工过的事物组成。
把你的工作小时和工资等级比作原始数据,当数据被电脑处理之后,通常被称为信息,信息就好比是你一周工资的总额。
在大型计算机系统中,有专门从事编写程序的专家、开发软件的专家和捕获数据的专家。
然而在微机系统中,通常是终端用户来处理这些工作。
要成为一名合格的终端用户,你必须了解包括软件、硬件和数据等信息工程的原理。
尽管可以很容易看出,人肯定是信息系统中最重要的部分。
但我们仍然每天接触大量电脑的系统信息。
大部分时间接触的是看得见的对象,比如我们用字处理系统来编辑一个文件,或者是我们连接网络。
另外一些时候,我们的接触是不明显的。
例如电脑和信息系统每天要无数次地按我们的指令工作。
只考虑以下三个方面。
(1)软件。
软件有系统软件和应用软件两种。
如前面谈到的软件是程序的另一种称呼。
程序是用来指导电脑怎样将数据转换成人们所需要信息的指令。
在大多数情况下,软件和程序的界限分的不是那么清楚。
有两种主要软件:
系统软件和应用软件。
可以这么认为,应用软件是你所使用的软件,系统软件是电脑所使用的软件。
①系统软件。
用户与应用软件打交道,系统软件使应用软件能够与硬件打交道。
系统软件是基础软件,帮助计算机管理内部资源。
最重要的系统软件程序是操作系统,它可以使电脑和应用软件交互作用。
操作系统处理这样的事情,如执行程序、储存数据和程序和处理数据。
Windows2000是目前电脑用户最熟悉的操作软件。
②应用软件。
应用软件是电脑终端用户使用的软件,应用软件负责全面的工作,比如工作处理和数据分析等。
有一些用途广泛的程序,它们几乎用于所有的领域。
这些程序,对你未来的工作将产生深远的影响。
这些基本应用之一就是,在因特网上浏览、察看、搜索信息。
使用最广泛的两个浏览器是:
Microsoft’sInternetExplorer和Netscape’sNavigator。
还有更多的应用程序比较专业化,适用于一些特定领域中。
这些应用程序是在你掌握了电脑基本知识后要进一步了解的内容。
最让人兴奋的应用软件是多媒体软件,它可以使用户将电视、音乐、声音和图像整合并组成交互式展示形式。
(2)微机硬件。
微机系统的硬件包括各种设备。
包括系统单元、输入和输出设备、储存和通信设备等基本类型。
①系统单元:
系统单元是放在电脑箱中的电子元器件。
系统单元主要由微机处理器和存储器组成。
微机处理器控制并操作数据使之成为信息。
内存,也被称为主储存器或随机存储器(RAM),它的作用是处理数据、储存数据和处理程序指令。
内存中还保存一些已处理等待输出的信息。
内存有时被称为暂时储存器,这是因为断电以后内存会失去所存储的信息。
②输入和输出设备:
输入设备是将人可以理解的数据或者是信息翻译为电脑可以处理的形式。
最普通的输入设备是键盘和鼠标。
输出设备是将电脑处理过的信息转化为人可以理解的信息。
最普遍的输出设备是显示器和打印机。
③辅助存储设备:
与存储器不同,辅助存储设备在断电以后仍然可以保存信息。
最主要的辅助存储设备有软盘、硬盘和光盘。
软盘被大量用于储存数据和将一个电脑中的数据输入到另一台电脑中。
之所以称为软盘,是因为数据是被储存在一张薄而柔软的塑料片上。
硬盘用于储存程序和大的文件。
硬盘有强大的功能,它访问信息的速度比软盘快。
光盘运用激光技术而且有很强大的存储功能。
两种最常见的光盘是CD和DVD。
④通信设备:
通信硬件传送和接受数据并处理信息从一台电脑到另一台电脑,或辅助存储器。
许多微机用调制解调器将电脑中的电子信号转化为电话线和网络可以接受的电子信号。
(3)数据。
数据是以文档、电子表格、数据库、图像展示文件的形式储存的。
数据被用来描述以下有关的事物。
当数据以文档的形式储存时,它能够作为信息系统直接使用。
①文档文件:
由字处理软件创建的、以备忘录形式存储的论文和书信等文档。
②工作表文件:
用电子表格制成的文件,可用于分析一些类似像预算和销售预测之类的事情。
③数据库文件:
通常由数据管理程序制成,包含着高度结构化和组织化的数据。
比如说一个雇员数据库文件,包括职员姓名、社会保障号码、职务头衔和其他一些相关信息。
④演示文件:
由图表演示程序制成,用来保存演示材料,
