Thehistoryoftheautomobilebeginsasearlyas1769,withthecreationofsteam-poweredautomobilescapableofhumantransport.Steam-poweredself-propelledvehiclesarethoughttohavebeendevisedinthelate18thcentury.GermanengineerKarlBenz,inventorofnumerouscar-relatedtechnologies,isgenerallyregardedastheinventorofthemodernautomobile.KarlBenzbuilthisfirstautomobilein1885inMannheim(Fig.1.2).Benzwasgrantedapatentforhisautomobileon29January1886,andbeganthefirstproductionofautomobilesin1888.

By1900,massproductionofautomobileshadbeguninFranceandtheUnitedStates.Innovationwasrapidandrampant,withnoclearstandardsforbasicvehiclearchitectures,bodystyles,constructionmaterials,orcontrols.Majorbreakthroughsinprovingtheusefulnessoftheautomobilecamewiththehistoriclong-distancedriveofBerthaBenzin1888,whenshetraveledmorethan80
kilometres(50

EdwardianEra
