Forty-threeyearsseemslikealongtimetorememberthenameofamereacquaintance.Ihaveforgottenthenameofanoldlady,whowasacustomeronthepaperrouteinmyhometownwhenIwasatwelve-year-oldboy.Yetitstaysinmymemory,forshetaughtmealessonofforgivenessthatIshallneverforget.
Onawinterafternoon,afriendandIwerethrowingstonesontotheleaningroofoftheoldlady'shousefromaspotnearherbackyard.Theobjectofourplaywastoobservehowthestoneschangedtomissiles(导弹)astheyrolledtotheroof'sedgeandshotoutintotheyard.Ifoundmyselfaperfectlysmoothrockandthrewitout.Thestone,however,slippedfrommyhandandheadedstraightforasmallwindowontheoldlady'sbackporch.Atthesoundoffracturedglass,weknewwewereintrouble.Weranasfastaspossible.
Iwastooscaredaboutgettingcaughttobeconcernedabouttheoldladywiththebrokenwindowinwinter.However,afewdayslater,whenIwassurethatIhadn'tbeendiscovered,Istartedtofeelguiltyforhermisfortune.ShestillgreetedmewithasmileeachdaywhenIgaveherthepaper,butIwasnolongerabletoactcomfortablyinherpresence.
