PlinytheElderwasanimportantmanintheRomanEmpirearoundthebeginningofthefirstMillennium.HeworkedforthegovernmentandhewasacommanderoftheRomannavyinsouthernItaly.Hewasalsoawriter.Manyofthemorethan160bookshewroteweresavedandheismostfamousforhisbooksonNaturalHistory,inwhichhedescribedmanythingshesawandobserved,andhisbooksaboutarchaeologyandcultureandcustomsofancientpeoples.
In76ADheadaptedhisnephewPlinytheYounger,whentheboywasabout14.afewyearslatertheywitnessedtheeruptionofMountVesuvius.AsanavalcommanderPlinytheElderorderedtheRomanwarshipstorescueasmanypeopleaspossible.Withhisownshiphesetouttoobservetheeruptionandrescuepeople.Hisinteresttostudythevolcanoledtohisdeath.
AsPlinytheYongergrewuphebecameanimportantwriterhimself.Hewasknowntobeanhonestandmodestman.Hewroteaplayandspeechesbutismostfamousforhisletters.Sometimeafterthedisaster,hewrotetwoletterstohisfriend,thehistorianTacitusabouttheeruptionofVesuviusandthewayhisuncledied.
Tacitus,whowasoneofthemostimportanthistorywritersinRomantimes,hadaskedhimbecausehewantedtousetheinformationinoneofhisbooks.
