JaySchwartzandhiscolleaguesasked181volunteerstolistento75soundsthatincludedlaughter,crying,moans,groans,andyellsfromactedorigins,liketelevisionormovies,andmorenaturalsources,suchasaYouTubevideoofachildopeningapresentandscreamingindelight.Thelistenersindicatedwhetherornoteachsoundwassomethingtheyconsideredascream.“Wedidnotprovideanytypeofdefinitionforascreambecauseweweretryingtogetatwhatisitinpeople’smindsthatdistinguishesascream,”saysSchwartz,whopresentedhisworkatameetingoftheAcousticalSocietyofAmericaon14May.
Whentheyanalyzedthesoundfiles,theyfoundthattheoneslistedasscreamshadacousticsimilarities.Peopleweremorelikelytoconsiderasoundascreamifitwashigherinpitch(音高),andhadavariedchangeinpitch,firstmovingupandthendownattheend.
Rapidchangesinamplitude—perceivedasarough,gravellyquality—alsotendedtobeclassifiedasscreamsmorethansoundswithasmoothertone.Thissoundwasclassifiedasascreamby64percentofthelisteners.Surprisingly,arecordingofawhistlewascategorizedasascreamby70percentoftheparticipants.“Itwasbecausethewhistleexhibitedalotoftheacousticqualitiesthatwefoundtobeassociatedwithascream,includinghighpitchandroughness,”saysSchwartz.
