CultureShockTheUnitedStatesofAmericaisacountryinwhichmany
peoplefromallovertheworldcomestoliveharmoniouslywitheachother.
UnlikeCanada,whichisamulticulturalcountry,itisameltingpotsinceeach
personbringshispeculiaritytoenrichthecultureofthiscountry.Butthis
meltingprocessisnotalwayswithoutpainorhurt.IfeltthelifeinCanadais
morecomfortableAccordingtoJohnJ.Macionis,theauthorofSociology,
secondaryCanadianedition.Cultureshockisastateofbewilderment,anxiety,
disorientationanddistressasanindividualsuddenlyexposedtoasocialor
culturalenvironmentradicallydifferentfromhisown.Ithappensfrequentlyfor
theinternationalstudentsandimmigrants.Cultureconflictsappearnotonly
whenstudentscometoschoolandlearnnewwaysoflivingthere,butalsowhen
theycomebackhomeandlivewiththeirownfamiliesortheirownsocieties.The
reasonforthatisthestudentsareyoungandeasytochange,buttheadultsare
notreadytofollowtheirexampleandadapttothenewsituation.WhenIfirst
cometoliveinthestates,mysystemofvaluesmustchangeinorderformeto
survive.WhenIfirstcametothestates,Iwasunpreparedtolivethere,that's
whyIalwayssufferfromstressbecauseofcultureshock.Ifeelthat
student-teacherrelationshipsinNorthAmericanarenotthesameastheywerein
HongKong.HongKongstudentsoftenhavehighregardfortheirteachers.InHong
Kong,studentsnevercalltheirteacherbytheirfirstname,becauseitisnot
respectfultotheteacher.Also,theyhesitatetoaskortoanswerquestionsin
classbecausetheydon'twanttolosetheirfaceinshowingtheirignorancein
frontoftheclass,andsometimesbecausetheirEnglishisnotgoodenoughto
formaclearquestion.Andiftheygivethewrongansweritnotonlyhumiliates
thembutalsobringsshameontheirfamilies.HongKongstudentsweretaughtto
bemodestandnottodisplaytheirknowledgefreelyuntilbeingspeciallycalled
for.Allthesethingscanleadtomisunderstandingsincemyteachersthought
thatIwastooshy,orstupid,orabnormal.Sometimeswhenbeingdirectlyasked
forsomequestions,unlikeAmericanstudents,whicharemorecreativeandcan
alwaysgiveafastanswer,Ihavetotakealongtimetothinkthequestion
over,becauseIwasafraidtogivetheincorrectanswer.Teachersoftenfeel
uncomfortablewithmysilenceandtendtointerpretmysilenceasanindicator
ofmyinabilitytoansweraquestion.It'sanormalthingthatAmericanteachers
expectAsianstudentstoaskthemtoexplainsomethingdifficult.However,Hong
Kongstudentsdon'tdothisaswehaveseenearlier.Moreover,theirfeedback
sometimesleadstomoremisunderstanding.Whenteachersseetheirstudents
listentotheminsmilingorinheadnodding,theyimaginethatthesestudents
understandthesubjectverywell.Inreality,somestudentsmasktheiremotions
andjustactlikethattobepolite,sincetheythinkthatiftheywouldask
question,theteacherswouldbehurtfortheirteachingwasnotclearenoughfor
theclass.Iwashavinglowexpectationfromtheteacheratthattimeandthat
affectsmylearning.Iwasstressedandfeltdisorientationallthetimein
school.Manyteachersdonottreattheirminoritylearnersasintelligent
students,andperhapsasaresult,theirminoritystudentsfailintheirclasses
(Scarcella,139).InHongKong,studentsstayinthesameclassroomwithafixed
seateverydayinasameyearwhiletheirteacherscometotheirclasstoteach
them.Therefore,studentscanhavemanyfriendswhoalwaysdothesamethings
withthem.Thishelpedtobuildamorecloseandstablerelationshipbetween
students.Studentsaremoreinterdependent.Whatareimportantisnotmebutwe.
InAmerica,thepeoplearemoreindividualistic.Peopleonlypursuetheirown
personalachievementandfulfillment.Relationshipsbetweenpeopleareoften
manybuttemporaryorcasual.IfeltpeopleonlycareaboutthemselvesandI
feltthattheyareveryselfish.AtthattimeIalwaysfeltlostandlonely
becauseIfeltitisdifficulttofindagoodfriendtotalkto.Relationship
arealwayscausal,noonewouldevencaresaboutyou.Peopleindifferent
cultureusuallyhavedifferentvalues.Inspeakingwithfriends,Ihad
misunderstandingtoo.IhaveafriendinschoolwhowasMiddleAmerican.He
oftentellspeoplehowhealthyheis.Itgavemeafeelingthathelikestoshow
off.ButIknowhewasnotshowingoff,hewasjustliketoexpresseshimself.
BecausetraditionalAsiansoftenlookdownonmaterialthingsanddon'tthink
thatthesethingscouldgivethemmorevalue.So,Iaskedmyfriendthepriceof
hishouses,carsorclothes,andhewasverysurprisedsincepeopledon'tdoso.
Moreover,peopletheredon'tasksomeone'sage,forpeopledon'twanttoshow
thattheyareold.ButinChineseculture,theelderlyareveryrespectedfor
theyareconsideredasknowingthesecretoflife,and,therefore,wiserthan
theyoungster.SoAsianpeoplearenothesitanttoaskandtelltheirages.Body
contactcanbeanothersubjectformisunderstanding.Inmyhomecountry,people
don'tkissorhugsomebodyoftheoppositesexinpublicplaces.Iwasvery
surprisedtoseepeoplekissingeachotherinfrontofme.Ontheotherhand,in
Asiancountries,homosexualityisalmostnon-exist,becauseevenifpeopleare
homosexualtheywillalwayshideitasasecret.Sotwogirlsortwoboyscan
walktogetherhandinhandandnooneisshocked.ButiftheydosoinAmerica,
theirAmericanfriendswillbehorrified.ThemainreasonthatIexperienced
cultureshockinAmericaorinothercountriesbecauseIhadpracticeda
particularcultureasmybasisofrealityandIamstronglyattachedtomyown
culture.Ethnocentrismisthepracticeofjudginganotherculturebythe
standardsofone'sownculture(Macionis,80).Ethnocentrismalsogenerates
misunderstandingandsometimesconflict.IagreethatIamethnocentricbutI
thinkethnocentrismisdifficulttoavoidbecausecultureislearnedthough
enculturationratherthaninborn.Youneverknowwhatarepeople'svaluesand
normsinothersocietiesifyouarenotlivinginthatsocietyandtrytolearn
thatculture.Ontheotherhand,theideaofculturalrelativismisthatthe
practiceofjudgingaculturebyitsownstandard.Whichmeanswhatisrightor
wrongtodoisonlydeterminedbyone'sownsociety.Sotherearenostandards
tojudgeothersocietiesandthereisnouniversalmorality.Thisideamaybe
verypersuasiveandreasonabletomanypeople.ButIthinkthereisalways
universaltruthintheworld,wecansometimesjudgeothersocietyinalogical
way.Forexample,todayinIndonesia,Chinesepeoplearediscriminated.Many
ChineseIndonesiansarebeingkilled,rapedandattacked.Ifculturalrelativism
istotallytrue,thenthereisnoreasonforustothinkthatourpeaceful
societyisbetterthantheviolencesocietythatusedtopracticegenocide.
Despiteallthesecultureconflicts,ImanagedtoearnAmericanwaythrough
schools,collegesandbecomerespectablecitizens.Insidethiscountry,there
stillaremanyethniccommunitieswherepeoplefromethnicgroupscometoshare
theirlives,tradefoods,andcelebratefestivals.Thataddstothediversityof
AmericanlifeandhelpsmainstreamAmericanpeopletounderstandmoreeasily
otherpeopleintheworld.
