Thisfrighteningscenarioisinparttheconsequenceofadramaticincreaseoverthelastquartercenturyinthedevelopmentofoncenaturalareasofwetmarshland;homenotonlytofrogsbuttoallmannerofwildlife.However,asyet,therearenoobviousreasonswhycertainfrogspeciesaredisappearingfromrainforestsinAustraliathathavebarelybeentouchedbyhumanhand.Themysteryisunsettlingtosaytheleast,foritisknownthatamphibianspeciesareextremelysensitivetoenvironmentalvariationsintemperatureandmoisturelevels.ThedangeristhatplanetEarthmightnotonlyloseavitallinkintheecologicalfoodchain(frogskeeppopulationsofotherwisepestilentinsectsatmanageablelevels),butwemightbeincreasingouroutputofairpollutantstolevelsthatmayhavealreadybecomeirreversible.Frogscouldbeinadvertentlywarningusofacatastrophe.
Anexampleofaspeciesoffrogthat,atfarasisknown,hasbecomeextinct,istheplatypusfrog.Likethewell-knownAustralianmammalitwasnamedafter,itexhibitedsomeverystrangebehaviour;insteadofgivingbirthtotadpolesinthewater,itraiseditsyoungwithinitsstomach.Thebabyfrogswereactuallybornfromoutoftheirmother'smouth.Discoveredin1981,lessthantenyearslaterthefroghadcompletelyvanishedfromthecrystalclearwatersofBooloumbaCreeknearQueensland'sSunshineCoast.Unfortunately,thisfreakofnatureisnottheonlyfrogspeciestohavebeenlostinAustralia.Sincethe1970s,nolessthaneightothershavesufferedthesamefate.
Onetheorythatseemstofitthefactsconcernsthedepletionoftheozonelayer,awelldocumentedphenomenonwhichhasledtoasharpincreaseinultravioletradiationlevels.TheozonelayerismeanttoshieldtheEarthfromUVrays,butincreasedradiationmaybehavingaGREatereffectuponfrogpopulationsthanpreviouslybelieved.Anothertheoryisthatworldwidetemperatureincreasesareupsettingthebreedingcyclesoffrogs.
