Companies,industries,laboratoriesandresearchcentersdevoteenergyandmakeinvestmentstodiscovernewwaystoenhanceandconsolidateavarietyofproductsingeneral.Thespacesthatshowcasescientificandtechnologicalprogresshavebecomehubsofsocialinterest,wheremagicandfantasyofthenearyetunknownfutureattractlikeamagnetthatboastsanamazingarrayoffeatures.
Inmankindandnature,scienceandtechnologyhaveuncoveredauniverseofsolutionsandanswersthatnotonlyshapesabetterfuturebutalsobringsallthebitsandpiecestogether.Natureservesasthemiddlemanbetweenmankindandscience;therelieitsstrengthandbrightfuture.Thevirtualworldhastakenonparamountimportanceandplaystheleadingroleintoday’sstage.

Howshouldabuildingthathostshi-techchineseindustryproduction,whichalsotakesadvantageoftheevolvingandever-changingscientificadvancementslooklike?
Whatshoulditsmaterialityandimagebe?

Shouldsuchabuildingreflectaspecificperiod’sarchitectureorshoulditinsteadupholdabstractandtimelessnotionsthatstandthetestoftime,soitwon’tbecomeobsoletelikesignatureortrendyarchitectureandfleetinglanguage?

Howshouldthebuildingconveythedialogamongscience,technology,natureandmankind,whilethelatter,itsend-user,reapsbenefitsfromtheassociateddiscoveriesandadvancements?
Beijing’sculturalparkisaplacethatpossessestheeverlastingidentityandcharacterofnature,inspiteofconstantchangesthroughtheseasons.
Howcanaproductwithinanaturallandscapemanagetobeunique,whileconveyinguniversalvalueswithintheframeworksofavirtualworld(whichrepresentsthefleetingandtheabstract)?
Thebuildingmustbeabletoconveytothevisitortheaforementionedmagicandfantasy,andactasamarketingtoolaswell.It’stheindustrialpark’sshowroom;asidefromstimulatingtrade,itmustalsolettheworldknowalltheintenseproductionandresearch.
Plan
Thebuildingmergeswiththelake’snaturalenvironment.It’sbothbelowandabovethewater.Thestatementisboldandoverwhelming.Whilethebuildingstealthilyblendsinwithitssurroundings,itdoessososeamlesslythatittendstovanish.
Thenewcenterofscienceandtechnologyhasitsfoundationsonland.Byburyingthebuildingandwideningthelake’ssurface,thelandclearedduringexcavationwillbeusedtobuildahill,whichwillallowaccesstothepublicplazaonitsrooffromdifferentareasofthepark.

Oncethelake’ssurfaceiswidened,thebuildingwillnaturallyblendin,withabstractresoluteness.Scienceconveystheseconceptsthatthebuildingofferswithaudacityandauthority.Theaforementionedhillembracesandprotectsthebuildingfromcoldnorthernwinds.Itwillbeagreenslopewherethepublicplazacanbeseenafar.
Oncetheexcavationandtheconstructionarefinished,waterwillfillinthelakeagaintocompletethelandscape.Thedialogamongthelake,theparkandthebuildingisalandscapingoperationofgreatcreativityandinventiveness,anditwillbringnewsensationstothegeneralpublic.

Thebuildingacknowledgesthevirtuesoftheexterior,anditwarmlywelcomesnature’spresence.Thelakeandtheadjacentsceneryofferanopportunityforthebuildingtoconversewithitssurroundings,whilemaximizingitspresenceandblendinginwithsubtlety.Thepureandsimpleoutlineofthebuildingstandsoutatadistance,yetitmergesharmoniouslywiththeculturalpark’slandscape.Thebuildingconveysuniversalandeternalnotions.Itiseasilyrecognizablenotbecauseofitsextravagancebutbecauseofitsresolutenessanduniqueness.
Accessingthebuildingevokestheideaofdescendingintothedepthofknowledge,ofexperience,ofhistoryandoflifeitself.Accessingthebuildingthroughwater’snatureconveystimelessnotionsthatwilllastforeverinindividualandcollectivememories.Thebuildingshowssolidarity.Itgeneratesapublicspaceonitsroof(thescienceandtechnologyplaza)asawayofintegratingitselfwithandbringinginpeople.

Thebuilding’smaterialityasseenfromtheoutsidereflectstheimageofthesurroundingelement:
water.Asubtlewatercurtainestablishesthebuilding’simage.Indifferentseasons(exceptchillywinters),waterflowsalongthefaçadeinaloop.Whenthebuildingisclosed,thewatercurtainisshutdown:
thescientificconceptoftransformationandchangeisthusaddedtoitsimage.Onecanthenenjoyadifferentanduniqueview.
Whereneeded,glassandwatercometogetherintheformof“waterwall”systemstogenerateablurryandabstractsurfacebytricklingwateroverglass.Thesubstanceofwateriseternalanduniversal.Itnevergoesoutoffashion.Itensuesfromthedialogwiththeenvironmentandthepreviouslymentionedinterpretationamongscience,technology,natureandmankind.Thesefourpiecesfittogetherperfectlyandspawnanindustrialproduct,whichbytransformingnatureanditsmatters,enricheslife.

Wateristhego-betweentheexteriorandtheinterior.Itssoundyieldsanaddedvalueasatoolofdesignandinnovation.It’sasubstancethatspeaksforitselfandit’scapableofgeneratingsubtlemoodsanddelicateartisticmoments.Thecoveredspaceontheroofisabigpublicplaza.Thescienceandtechnologyplazaisconfiguredbywatermirrorsandpathways,accessandleisuresituations.Itwillbeagreatplacetomeetandinteract.Asifemergingfromthelake,theplazawillbepartlycoveredbywater.Beyonditsnaturalimpactonthescenery,thewatershieldstheinnerspacefrombeijing’sclimate.
Byfollowingchineselandscapetraditions,thelargepondsontheroofrecreateandmultiplythesurroundinglake,andtheyofferviewsfromavantagepointwhichresemblethoseofanartificialislandfloatingsixmetersabovewater.Whentakingabriskwalk,onecan’thelpbutfeelasenseofpridetobestandingoverchina’sgreatindustrialproduction.Thewaterofthepondssetinmotionbybreezeorrainwillfreezeduringwinter,thuschangingthescenerywithgreatsensibility.

Insummer,fallandspring,thewatermirrorwillprovideprotectionagainstheat.Inwinter,thefrozenwaterwillworkasathermalbarrieragainstoutsidetemperatureaslowas-20degrees.Asidefromthesurroundinglake,thefrozensurfacewillalsoserveasaniceskatingfacilityforthegeneralpublic.
Theconceptofinfinity,conveyedbyscience,isever-present.Thepathwaysconverge.Circularpathwaysareendless.Thebuildingcanbeaccessedfromtheplaza.Alookoutcapturesthewholescenery.Elevatorsandescalatorsleadvisitorstowardstheinnerspacebelowthelake’swaterlevel.

Itstechnologicalmaterialityinducesthepossibilityoftransformation,andallowsittocommunicate,likealighthouse,messagesandimagesthatareeasilyrecognizablefromadistance.Largebleachersofcontemplationisdirectlyovertheeffectstheater.Naturallightfiltersthroughrows,illuminatingtheundergroundhallandexhibitionarea.

There’sarampthattakethegeneralpublicfromtheelevatedplazatoapartiallyroofedspacebetweenthebuildingandthewatercurtain.Fromtheretheinnerstirringsofthebuildingcanbeseenfromtheoutsidewherethewatercurtainofthefaçadeiswithinarm’sreach.
Thebuilding’smainaccessisthroughthepark’ssouthernsector.Afootbridgelocated1meterbelowwaterlevelinthevicinityofthesubwaystationandtheparkleadsvisitorsin.Ithasasensuousandartisticfeel.Itpreludestheuniquespatialexperiencethatistobelivedinsidethebuilding.

Thereare3accessestowardtheupperpublicplaza,locatedinthesouth,eastandwestsectorsofthepark.Theyestablishapedestriancircuitthatconsolidatessurroundingtrafficstreams.Thevehicleaccessandtheloadingandunloadingareaarelocatedinthenorthernsectorofthepark,behindtheman-madehill.
Theinnerspaceconveysscience’scomplexityandtheconceptoftechnology.Fromtheinside,onecanenjoythewatercurtain’sartificialnatureandperceivetheundergroundspaceoftheexhibitionandconferenceareas.Aclearorganizationiscoupledwithperimetertrafficalongthepathofscience,whichaddsvaluebygraphicallyandeducationallyunveilinghistory,evolutionandthecomingfuturewithaudiovisualaids.
