I’manunlikelyspeaker,notjustbecauseIdroppedout,butbecausewe’retechnicallyinthesamegeneration.Wewalkedthisyardlessthanadecadeapart,studiedthesameideasandsleptthroughthesameEc10lectures.Wemayhavetakendifferentpathstogethere,especiallyifyoucameallthewayfromtheQuad,buttodayIwanttosharewhatI’velearnedaboutourgenerationandtheworldwe’rebuildingtogether.
我本不可能是站在这里发表演讲的人,不仅仅因为我是一名辍学生,还因为其实我们是同一代人。
我作为学生走在这个校园里,也就是不过十年前的事情。
我们学习过同样的知识,同样在EC10课堂上补觉。
尽管我们通过不同的方式来到这里,尤其那些Quad园区的同学(TheQuad以前是RadcliffeCollege的女生宿舍。
Radcliffe从1879至1977年是哈佛的女性学院,1977年汇入哈佛);
但今天我想和你们分享的是,我对我们这代人的一些想法,和我们正在合力建设的这个世界。
Butfirst,thelastcoupleofdayshavebroughtbackalotofgoodmemories.
首先,过去几天令我想起很多美好的回忆。

IwasplayingCivilizationandIrandownstairs,gotmydad,andforsomereason,hisreactionwastovideomeopeningtheemail.Thatcouldhavebeenareallysadvideo.IsweargettingintoHarvardisstillthethingmyparentsaremostproudofmefor.
你们当中多少人还确切记得,当初收到哈佛的录取通知邮件时在做什么?
当时我正在玩《文明》游戏,然后我跑下楼,找到我的父亲,不过他的反应很奇怪,居然开始拍摄我打开邮件的过程。
那个视频可能看着挺难过吧。
但我发誓,被哈佛录取,是最令我父母为我感到骄傲的事情。

MinewasComputerScience121withtheincredibleHarryLewis.IwaslatesoIthrewonat-shirtanddidn’trealizeuntilafterwardsitwasinsideoutandbackwardswithmytagstickingoutthefront.Icouldn’tfigureoutwhynoonewouldtalktome--exceptoneguy,KXJin,hejustwentwithit.Weendedupdoingourproblemsetstogether,andnowherunsabigpartofFacebook.Andthat,Classofxx,iswhyyoushouldbenicetopeople.
你们还记得在哈佛上的第一节课吗?
我上的是计算机121,HarryLewis老师超级棒。
当时我要迟到了,于是抓了件T恤就套在身上,结果直到下午才发现我把它前后里外都穿反了,商标都露在前胸。
然后我还纳闷怎么没人理我,除了一个人,KXJin,他没有在意这些。
之后,我们开始组队解决难题,现在他负责Facebook很大一块业务。
这说明什么?
xx的毕业生们,这说明为什么你们应该对别人友善一些。

但是我在哈佛最美好的回忆,是我遇见了Priscilla(扎克伯格的妻子)。
当时我刚上线一个恶作剧网站Facemash,然后管理委员会表示“要见我”,所有人都认为我要被赶走了。
我爸妈来帮我打包行李;
我朋友帮我搞了个告别派对。
幸运的事情就在这里,Priscilla和她朋友一起,来到了这个Party。
我们在PfohoBelltower的卫生间外排队时遇见了,接下来发生了一件永生难忘的浪漫事件——我说:
“我三天后就要被赶出学校了,所以我们需要尽快开始约会。

Ididn’tendupgettingkickedout--Ididthattomyself.PriscillaandIstarteddating.And,youknow,thatmoviemadeitseemlikeFacemashwassoimportanttocreatingFacebook.Itwasn’t.ButwithoutFacemashIwouldn’thavemetPriscilla,andshe’sthemostimportantpersoninmylife,soyoucouldsayitwasthemostimportantthingIbuiltinmytimehere.
我没有被开除——我想办法留下来了。
Priscilla开始和我约会。
你们知道,那部电影(《社交网络》)说的Facemash对创造Facebook好像很重要似的。
并非如此。
但是没有Facemash的话,我遇不到Priscilla。
她是我生命中最重要的人,所以从这个角度说,Facemash是我人生中做出的最重要的一样东西。

TodayIwanttotalkaboutpurpose.ButI’mnotheretogiveyouthestandardmencementaboutfindingyourpurpose.We’remillennials.We’lltrytodothatinstinctively.Instead,I’mheretotellyoufindingyourpurposeisn’tenough.Thechallengeforourgenerationiscreatingaworldwhereeveryonehasasenseofpurpose.
今天我想谈谈目标(Purpose),但是我不是来给你们做一些程序化的宣言,告诉你们如何发现目标的。
我们是千禧一代,我们会出于直觉和本能发现目标。
相反地,我站在这里要说的,是仅仅发现目标还不够。
我们这代人面临的挑战,是创造一个人人都能有使命感的世界。

肯尼迪访问美国宇航局太空中心时,看到了一个拿着扫帚的看门人。
于是他走过去问这人在干什么。
看门人回答说:
“总统先生,我正在帮助把一个人送往月球。
Purposeisthatsensethatwearepartofsomethingbiggerthanourselves,thatweareneeded,thatwehavesomethingbetteraheadtoworkfor.Purposeiswhatcreatestruehappiness.
目标是我们意识到我们是比自己更大的东西的一部分,是我们被需要的、我们需要更为之努力的东西。
目标能创造真正的快乐。
You’regraduatingatatimewhenthisisespeciallyimportant.Whenourparentsgraduated,purposereliablycamefromyourjob,yourchurch,yourmunity.Buttoday,technologyandautomationareeliminatingmanyjobs.Membershipinmunitiesisdeclining.Manypeoplefeeldisconnectedanddepressed,andaretryingtofillavoid.
今天,你在这个特别重要的时刻毕业了。
当你父母毕业的时候,目标很大程度上工作、教会、社群。
但是今天,技术和自动化正在代替很多工作,社区成员人数也在下降。
许多人感到沮丧,感到自己被隔离开来了,同时也在努力填补空白。
AsI’vetraveledaround,I’vesatwithchildreninjuveniledetentionandopioidaddicts,whotoldmetheirlivescouldhaveturnedoutdifferentlyiftheyjusthadsomethingtodo,anafterschoolprogramorsomewheretogo.I’vemetfactoryworkerswhoknowtheiroldjobsaren’tingbackandaretryingtofindtheirplace.
当我走过很多地方的时候,我曾和许多被拘留的、阿片类药物成瘾的孩子们坐在一起,他们告诉我如果他们有事可做,参加课后活动或者有地方可去,他们的人生会变得很不一样。
我也遇到过很多工厂的工人,他们没法再从事之前从事的工作了,所以试图找到新的能做的事。
Tokeepoursocietymovingforward,wehaveagenerationalchallenge--tonotonlycreatenewjobs,butcreatearenewedsenseofpurpose.
为了保持社会的进步,我们身负挑战——不仅仅是创造新的工作,还要创造新的目标。
IrememberthenightIlaunchedFacebookfrommylittledorminKirklandHouse.IwenttoNoch’swithmyfriendKX.IremembertellinghimIwasexcitedtoconnecttheHarvardmunity,butonedaysomeonewouldconnectthewholeworld.
我还记得在KirklandHouse的小宿舍中创造Facebook的那晚。
我和我的朋友KX去了Noch。
我记得我告诉他,我很开心能把哈佛的社群连接起来,但是有一天,有人会把整个世界都连接起来。

我完全没有想到这个人会是我们。
当时我们还只是大学生,对此还并不了解。
所有这些大型技术公司都有资源,我只是认为其中一个大公司会做到这一点。
但是,我对这个想法很确信——所有人都想和彼此连接,所以我们一直在朝这个方向努力前进。

我知道你们中的很多人也会有类似的故事。
你觉得很多人都在改变世界,然而他们并没有,而你会。
Butit’snotenoughtohavepurposeyourself.Youhavetocreateasenseofpurposeforothers.
但是,光有目标是不够的。
你必须拥有心系他人的目标。
Ifoundthatoutthehardway.Yousee,myhopewasnevertobuildapany,buttomakeanimpact.Andasallthesepeoplestartedjoiningus,Ijustassumedthat’swhattheycaredabouttoo,soIneverexplainedwhatIhopedwe’dbuild.
意识到这点非常难。
我从来没想过创造一个公司,我想要的是创造影响力。
越来越多的人加入我们,我假设他们跟我关心的是同样的东西,所以我从来没解释过我到底希望建立什么。
Acoupleyearsin,somebigpanieswantedtobuyus.Ididn’twanttosell.Iwantedtoseeifwecouldconnectmorepeople.WewerebuildingthefirstNewsFeed,andIthoughtifwecouldjustlaunchthis,itcouldchangehowwelearnabouttheworld.
几年来,一些大公司想要收购我们。
我拒绝了。
我想知道是否能连接更多的人。
我们正在建立第一个新闻流(NewsFeed),当时我想,如果我们能做到这一点,它可能会改变我们学习世界的方式。
Nearlyeveryoneelsewantedtosell.Withoutasenseofhigherpurpose,thiswasthestartupdreametrue.Ittoreourpanyapart.Afteronetenseargument,anadvisortoldmeifIdidn’tagreetosell,Iwouldregretthedecisionfortherestofmylife.Relationshipsweresofrayedthatwithinayearorsoeverysinglepersononthemanagementteamwasgone.
几乎所有人都想让我把公司卖了。
没有更高远的使命感,这个创业公司不可能梦想成真。
经过激烈的争论后,一位顾问跟我说,如果我不同意出售,我会后悔一辈子。
一年左右的时间里,当时的管理层几乎都走了。
ThatwasmyhardesttimeleadingFacebook.Ibelievedinwhatweweredoing,butIfeltalone.Andworse,itwasmyfault.IwonderedifIwasjustwrong,animposter,a22year-oldkidwhohadnoideahowtheworldworked.
这是我在Facebook时最艰难的时刻。
我相信我们在做的东西,但是我也感到孤独。
更糟糕的是,当时我觉得这是我的错。
我在想是不是我错了,一个22岁的小孩,都不知道世界是怎么运转的。
Now,yearslater,Iunderstandthatishowthingsworkwithnosenseofhigherpurpose.It’suptoustocreateitsowecanallkeepmovingforwardtogether.
多年以后的今天,我明白了那是因为没有更高的目标。
是否创造它取决于我们,所以我们能一起前进。
TodayIwanttotalkaboutthreewaystocreateaworldwhereeveryonehasasenseofpurpose:
bytakingonbigmeaningfulprojectstogether,byredefiningequalitysoeveryonehasthefreedomtopursuepurpose,andbybuildingmunityacrosstheworld.
今天我想谈谈创造一个每个人都有使命感的世界的三种方法:
一起做有意义的项目;
通过重新定义平等,使每个人都有追求目标的自由;
在全世界建立社群。
First,let’stakeonbigmeaningfulprojects.
首先,让我们来说说做有意义的项目。
Ourgenerationwillhavetodealwithtensofmillionsofjobsreplacedbyautomationlikeself-drivingcarsandtrucks.Butwehavethepotentialtodosomuchmoretogether.
我们这一代将不得不面对数千万的工作被机器取代的情况,比如自动驾驶。
但我们还有很多事能一起去完成。
