Challenge
BasedVERSAmoduleEuropeanstandardbus(VMEbus)testequipmentisoftenusedsubmarinesystem,verifywhetherthemoduleisinitssub-componentscanbereadytouse(readyforissue,RFI)staterequirestheuseoflarge,complex,andlaboratoryenvironmentstestingequipment,andrequiresallthesub-componentsofthemoduleinaunifiedcenterfortesting.
Solution
UsecompacttheNIPXImodularinstruments,LabVIEWsoftwareandNITestStandtodevelopandVMEbustestequipmenttestfunctionwiththesamemilitarytestsystems,whilesignificantlyreducingthesize,reducecomplexityandcosts,sothattheNavycanbedeployedinthetestsystemstrategiclocation,andreduceoverallmaintenancecostsandsubmarinefleetlogisticscosts.
OrbisInc.(Orbis)isacompanywith130employeesofsmallbusinesses,isheadquarteredinthestateofSouthCarolinainCharleston.ItscorebusinessistheU.S.DepartmentofDefense(DoD)toprovideengineeringandprojectmanagementservices.Orbisisalsocommittedtoconductcutting-edgeresearchanddevelopmentprojects,focusingondevelopinginnovativeautomatedtestsystems(ATS).
Tomeetmilitaryneeds
CriticaloperationalsystemsandsupportsuitemanysystemsbasedonVMEtechnology.Thesesystemsmaintenanceandtroubleshootinginvolvessub-assembliesbetweenthemoduleandtheRFIsparepartsareinterchangeable.Systemtroubleshootingproceduresuseanyofthemodulesmustbere-testedandverifiedbeforetheycanreturntoRFIstatusandkeptasaspare.Asthetraditionalsystem,alltestswerecarriedoutinacentralposition,thetotalcostofownershipwillincrease.Inadditiontothecostoftransportmodule,anothermajorcostfromthepartstomaintainsufficientinventorytoreplacebeingtestedandthecomponentsduringtransport.
BasedontheautomatedtestingandfunctionaltestingfortheU.S.DepartmentofDefensetowritecodefortheexperience,theNavyfoundOrbistohelpthemdevelopacompact,flexibleandcanmeetorexceedtheexistingtestsystemsfunctionalprototypetestsystem.Wehavesuccessfullybuiltaprototypetodemonstratethenewsystemcannotonlyusemoderntestingequipmentandmethods,andinthepremisewithoutsacrificingfunctionalitytestsystemscurrentlycostonlyasmallpart.
FromtheNIPXImodularinstrumentstofindsolutions
Byusingthestand-aloneinstrumentsandmodularinstrumentsforcomparingvarioussolutions,wedecidedtousePXImodularinstrumentationplatform,becauseweneedacompactandflexibletestsystem.Next,weanalyzedthesuppliers,choseNIPXIdevicesasthesolesupplierbecausethecompanyistheleaderinPXI,NIoffersawiderangeofPXImodulestomeettheneedsofourtestsystemsandtechnicalrequirements,theThecompanyalsoprovidesa"plugandplay"environment.PXIplatformforourdevelopmentprovidesagoodstart,becauseNIModulesandLabVIEWtoensurethatalldevicescancommunicatewithouthavingtocreatecustomdevicedrivers.
WeusetwoNIPXI-2531moduletocreatean8×128crosspointswitchmatrixtothePXImeasurementmoduleconnectedtoallpointsonthemassinterconnectinterfacetestadapters(ITA).Withthisswitchmatrix,wehavetoconnecttotheITADUT(UUT)toachievefullfunctionaltestconfigurationsalltherequiredconnections.Additionally,wewillVMEinterfaceisintegratedintothetestsystemandconnectittotheITA,whichprovidesforeachUUTcomprehensiveVMEbustest.
IntegratedNIPXIandLabVIEW,NITestStand
WeprimarilywritteninLabVIEWandNITestStandtestsystemstestassembly.Byeliminatingtheneedtowritecustomdrivers,NIsoftwaregreatlysimplifiesthehardwareandsoftwaresystemsintegration.Afterstartingtheprogram,LabVIEWwillcalleachPXImodulesforself-testoperation,checkthecalibrationdateisvalid,andthenthefunctionaltests.EachtestwritteninLabVIEW,NITestStandtocallintheexecution.Theendofthetestexecution,thetestwillbebasedonthecollecteddataandgenerateareadablereportcanbeexportedinXMLformat.

Inordertodevelopthecurrentstabilizationsystem,weuseNILabVIEW2010software,LabVIEWFPGAModuleandtheLabVIEWReal-TimeModule.DevelopmentprocesslargelydependsontrainingandNILabVIEWvolumelicenseagreement.
ChangingviewsonCompactATS
OrbiswillPXI-basedtestsystemwithacustomITAandVMEinterfacescombinedesignandbuildaprototypecalledCompactTestertestsystem.CompactTesterwith12cubicfeetof18-slotPXIchassistestsystemreplacesthe84cubicfeetoftestsystems.Comparedwiththeprevioustestsystems,costreductionof3times,15timessmallerfootprint,weight25times,thisdifferenceisverysignificant.Inaddition,theuseofindustry-standardPXIhardwareandLabVIEWsoftware,wewerealsoabletoreducethedailyoperationandmaintenancecosts.
InadditiontoachievingallthegoalssetfortheCompactTester,thePXI-basedsystemalsohasotheradvantages.Interconnectionduetothesizeandmassreduction,therebycompletingthenumberofcablesrequiredforeachtestissignificantlyreduced.Whichinturnallowsustoreducethecablecanacquiremorerealsignals,greatlyimprovingtheaccuracyofeachmeasurement.
WithLabVIEW,NITestStandandNIPXImodularinstruments,OrbisCompactTesterquicklydevelopedaprototypetodemonstratetheNavy.Navytestnewfunctionalityprovidedbythesystem,thepotentialcostsavings,aswellasreducingsignalnoiseRFIsparesreturnedtotheTreasurytoreducethetimeandotheradvantagescooing.
Multithreadedprogrammingchallenge
Todate,theprocessortechnologyinthefieldofinnovationhasmadeyourcomputerisworkingathigherclockspeedofthecentralprocessingunit(CPU).However,astheclockrateapproachingitstheoreticalphysicallimitswithmultiple(ratherthanindividual)amongthenewprocessorsareintheresearchanddevelopmentofnuclear.Takeadvantageofthesenewmulticoreprocessorforautomatedtestapplicationsusingparallelprogrammingtechniques,youcanachievethebestperformanceandhighestthroughput.DrEdwardLee-theUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley,distinguishedprofessorofelectricalandcomputerengineeringdepartment--describeparallelprocessingtechnology.

Waslucky,LabVIEWformulticoreprocessorsprovideanidealprogrammingenvironment,becauseitprovidesavisualenvironmentforcreatingparallelalgorithm,anditcanbedynamicallyassigningmultiplethreadstoagivenapplication.Infact,theuseofautomatedtestapplicationsformulti-coreprocessors,caneasilybeoptimizedtoobtainthebestperformance.Moreover,PXIemodularinstrumenttoenhancethistechnicaladvantage,becausethePCIebushighdatatransferratespossible.FrommulticoreprocessorsandPXIedevicestwospecificapplicationsare:
multichannelsignalanalysisandonlineprocessing(hardwareintheloop).Inthesubsequentsectionsofthisarticle,wewillexaminethevariousparallelprogrammingtechniques,characterizationandperformanceadvantagesassociatedwitheachtechnology.
