1.RADIO
Inancienttimestheonlywaythatmencouldsendmessagesfromvillagetovillagewasonfoot.Whenmenlearnedtousethehorse,municationbecamemuchquicker.However,paredtothemodernworldmunicationwasstillquiteslow.Manypartsoftheworldhadnoknowledgeofeventsinotherplaces.Later,thepostwasintroducedandhorseriderscarriedletters.Thismeantthatmunicationwasfurtherimproved.Horsesdrawncoachescouldmovepeoplefromtowntotowninquiteafortableway.Atthebeginningofthelastcenturythesteamtrainwasinventedandforthefirsttimereallyfastmunicationbecamepossible.Notonlycouldlettersbesenteasilyfromonepartofacountrytoanother,buttravelwasmadeeasy,too.Ataboutthesametime,steamshipshelpedmunicationbetweencountries.
Theinventionofthetelegraphinthemiddleofthelastcenturyfurtherincreasedthespeedatwhichmessagescouldbesent.Inthissystemelectricalsignals,incode,aresentalongmetalwires.Thesesignalstravelsofastthattheycouldgonearlyeighttimesroundtheworldinonesecond.Aspecialdeviceisneededtosendthecode.Attheotherendanotherdeviceisusedinordertoreceivethecode.Bythismethodmessagescanbesentoverdistancesofseveralhundredkilometres.Withtheinventionofthetelephonethehumanvoicecouldbesentoverlongdistances.Becauseofthisthetelephonesystemreplacedthetelegraphforquickmunicationoverlongdistances.Thetelegraphisstillused,however,bynewspapersinordertosendnewsandforotherpurposestoo.
Atthebeginningofthiscenturyradiowasinventedandinafewyearsmunicationwasagainimproved.Themaindifferencebetweenradioandtelephoneisthatradiousesnoelectricalsignalswhichtravellongdistancesalongwires.Insteadinvisiblewaves,movingatthesamespeedaselectricalsignals,areused.Afewyearsagotherewerenotmanyradiostationsintheworld.Todaytherearemanyhundredsofradiostationsbroadcastingindifferentlanguagesandinallcountries.Theinvisibleradiowavescaneasilytravelfromonecountrytoanother.Thismeansthatlistenersinonecountrycanlistentoprogrammesbroadcastfromanothercountry.Inthiswayinformationtravelsfromcountrytocountry.Radioisoftenusedbypolicementomunicatewithoneanother.Inaddition,policeforcesinonecountrycanmunicatewiththoseinothercountriesinordertocatchcriminals.Shipsatseauseradiosothattheyknowexactlywheretheyare.Aeroplanesuseradioforthesamereasonandthismakesiteasierforthemtofindtheirwayfromplacetoplace.
