ThefirststudywasdoneatDukeUniversityinDurham,NorthCarolina.Researchersgaveextracarbondioxidetoatestareawherepinetreesweregrowing.Thetreesgrewthirty-fourpercentfasterduringthefirstthreeyears.However,intime,thetreesslowedtoabouttheirnormalgrowthrate.Thescientistssaythisisbecausetreesneedotherthings,suchasnitrogen.
Inthesecondstudy,researchersfromDukeandBowdoinCollegeinBrunswick,Maineexaminedthesoilaroundtrees.Theydiscoveredthatastheleavesbrokedownintothesoil,allthecarbonwasnottrappedinthesoil.Muchofitwasreleasedintotheatmosphereascarbondioxide.
ThefindingsofthetwostudieswerepublishedlastmonthinNaturemagazine.Theysuggestthereislimitedvalueinplantingtreestoreducethecarbondioxidepollutionintheatmosphere.
Forestplantinghasbeenapartofnegotiations(商议)onaworldagreementtoreducegreenhousegasesthatscientistsbelievecauseglobalwarming.TheUnitedStates,Canada,Japanandsomeotherindustrialcountrieshavesupportedtheidea.Butthisnewresearchsuggeststheideaisnotaseffectiveasenvironmentalactivistshadthought.ScientistRamOrenofDukeUniversityledthestudyontreegrowth.Hesaysthatearlierestimatesontheabilityofforeststoabsorbcarbondioxidewereoverlyhopeful.
