Citybycity,Summerlin’soldMarinepalshavepickeduptheraceinsupportofhismissiontohelpsupporttheWoundedWarriorsProjectfordisabledvetsaswellastwoothervetgroupsinhishomestateofWestVirginia.Sofarhehasraised$40,000.Althoughthetriphasbeentrying—Summerlinhasruninsomeextremeweatherconditionsandwithashininjury—ithasbeenanhonor,hesaid.
Onthe100thdayofhisrun,SummerlinwillcelebratetheholidayinAnnapolis,Marylandwithhisfamilyandfriends.Butitdoesnotendthere.OnJuly5th,hewillhittheroadforanother100miles,toofficiallyfinishinDelaware’sRehobethBeach.
WoundedWarriorsParticipateinSoldierRide
Acyclingeventhelpsveteransrestoretheirphysicalandemotionalwell-being.
TobyMontoyahadmadeapromisetohisbestfriend,Sgt.KennethRahmoftheIllinoisNationalGuard,thatifRahmeverdeployed,Montoyawouldgowithhim.SowhenRahm’sunitwascalledup,MontoyaputinatransferfromtheNewMexicoNationalGuardandthetwomenweredeployedtoAfghanistantogether.
In2009,Montoya’svehiclewashitbyaroadsidebomb.Asaresultoftheexplosion,Montoyaiswheelchairbound,suffersfromatraumaticbraininjuryandadegenerativediskdisease,andhaslostabout30percentofhisperipheralvisioninbotheyes.
Thisyear,MontoyareunitedwiththemembersofhisunitforthefirsttimesinceleavingAfghanistantoparticipateinSoldierRide,acyclingeventorganizedbythenonprofitWoundedWarriorProjecttohelpveteransrestoretheirphysicalandemotionalwell-being.SoldierRideisbeingheldin12citiesin2012:

KeyWest,Tampa,Jacksonville,Washington,DC,Chicago,NewYork,Seattle,NorthFork,Phoenix,Nashville,SanAntonio,andLandstuhl,Germany.
“Iofficiallycamehome,”saidMontoya.“We’venevernotfinishedanythingtogether.I’mnotworriedaboutfinishingtoday.Thisisabrotherhood.”
ABlindSoldierSwimstoWin
Thissummer,Americahasanextraordinaryopportunitytocheerononeofourcountry’swoundedwarriors,Lt.BradleySnyder,asheswimsforthegoldatthe2012ParalympicGamesinLondon.
IwasdeeplymovedbyauthorBillBriggs’inspiringthree-partpieceonthe28-year-oldNavylieutenant,whowasservinginAfghanistanasan“explosiveordinancedemolitionspecialist”—militaryjargonfor“bombdefuser”—lastfall.AfterrushingtotheaidoftwowoundedAfghansoldiers,hewasblindedbyanIEDblast.
Duringhisrecovery,Snydersoughtcomfortfromthefrustrationsofphysicaltherapyinthesmoothnessofhisswimmingstrokes.HebegantrainingfortheParalympicGames,bothtochallengeotherblindswimmersandtoprovethathisnewfoundobstaclewouldnotbreakhisspirit.
ThewaySnydermakeshiswayacrossthepoolincompletedarknessisnothingshortofremarkable.Hekeepssilentcountofhisstrokestomaintainasteadypace,andwilloccasionallybrushhisfingersagainstthelanelinetoascertainhisposition.Snyder’sbrotherandcoachactashis“tappers”oneachsideofthelane,gentlytappingtheswimmeronthebackoftheheadwithapaddedwalkingcanetosignalaflipturnorfinishingkick.
AttheswimmingtrialsthispastweekendSnydershatteredhispersonalbestinthe400-meterfreestyle,settinganewworldrecordintheeventforfullyblindswimmersandsecuringhisspotonthe2012U.S.Paralympicteam.He’llbejoiningover30militaryveteransandactive-dutysoldierscompetingintheParalympicsthissummer.

Ihavebeenreportingonextraordinarypeoplefor25yearsasatelevisionjournalist,butthissmallOregontownandthemanatitscenter,WoodyDavis,standaloneinmymemory.WhenIreadanewspaperclipaboutthecommunity’sreactiontoWoody’sdeclininghealth,IknewthatthiswouldbeaspecialstoryformyCBSEveningNewsseries,OntheRoad(thetranscriptofwhichisbelow).
ButnothingpreparedmeforwhathappenedwhenItraveledtoOregonlastDecemberandbeganknockingondoors.EverysinglepersonknewWoodyandhadcountlessstoriestotellabouthisselflessnessandgenerosity.
Forfivedecades,hehelpedplowcarsoutofsnow,choppedwood,repairedfarmequipment,andmore.Hewastheconsummategoodneighbor,andinhistimeofneed,thecommunitywasrallyingaroundhim.I’dneverseenanythinglikeit.

Theirwordsanddeedsaresincereandlasting.Unfortunately,theboxispine—andtheoutlookisn’tgood.Afewmonthsago,WoodywasdiagnosedwithALS—LouGehrig’sdisease.Doctorstellhimhehasaboutsixmonths.Thedisease,whichattacksthenervoussystem,isalreadymakingithardforhimtoliftmuchofanythingoreventalk.Buthisattituderemainsunaffected.“Whatdoyouthinkofwhateverybody’sbeendoingforyou?

Ireallydidn’tthinkI’dheardhimright.“Wait,didyoujustsayyoufeelblessedthatyou’redyingslowly?

Inmostcommunities,deathiswhispered,andpraisedissavedfortheeulogy.ButWoodyDavisandthepeopleofCorbett,Oregon,showuswhythatmaybetoolate.Turnsoutevenangelsliketoknowthey’vemadeadifference.
MiracleBoySurvivoroftheHaitiEarthquake
Anestimated100,000childrenwereleftorphanedbytheJanuary2010earthquakeinHaiti,butKiki,luckily,isnotoneofthem.
DeepintheHaitiancountryside,threehoursfromteeming,quake-tornPort-au-Prince,Moise“Kiki”Joachinsharesatwo-roomwoodenshackwithhisoldersisterandyoungerbrother,theirmother,herparents,andfourorfiveotherrelatives.Coconutandbananatreesgrowinthedirtyard,butarecentfloodhaswipedoutthefamily’sgarden.Sotheybuyfoodfromvendorsdowntheroad,astrainontheirminusculebudget.
“They’rereallystruggling,”saysphotojournalistAllisonShelley,whotrackeddownthefamilyinNovemberforReader’sDigest.
“Theadultsshareacoupleofmattressesonthefloor,andthekidssleeponpilesofclothesandcomforters.”Evenso,theJoachinsarebetteroffthanmanyinthisbeleagueredcountry,wheremorethanonemillionpeoplestillliveintentcitiesandmorethan2,000havediedinacholeraoutbreak.Anestimated100,000childrenwereleftorphanedbylastyear’searthquake,butKiki,luckily,isnotoneofthem.
Evenaroundhisparents,however,heisatimidboy,giventoone-wordanswers,stillstrugglingtofindhisplaceinthesenewsurroundings.Askedwhichhelikesbetter,thequietvillageofDepale—wherehehasspentthepast12months—orhisbustlinghometown,eight-year-oldKikianswerswithouthesitation:
“Port-au-Prince.”
That’swherehewasJanuary12,2010,whenamassiveearthquakestruckHaiti.Asthegroundbeganconvulsing,Kiki’smother,GraciaRaymond,ranfromtheporchoftheirapartmentbuildinginsearchofherfive-year-oldson,David,whowasoutsidefetchingwater.Bloodiedbyfallingcinderblocks,shebeganfranticallyburrowingthroughthecrumbledconcretetowardherfiveotherkids.Shecouldmakenoheadway.
Kiki’sfather,Odinel,wastrappedinhisofficeattheHaitiancustomsservice.Itwouldtakehimtwodaystofindhiswife.Whenshetoldhimthatfiveoftheirchildrenwereburiedinthewreckageoftheirhome,“Iaskedaneighbortochopoffmyhead,”Odinelrecalls,“becauseIhadnoreasontolive.”
Foreightdays,Kikiwasburiedbeneaththeruinsofhisapartmentbuilding.HeandSabrina,11,huddledinatinyspaceundertonsofrubble,withnofoodorwater,barelyabletomove;
nearbylayTitite,four,andthebodiesoftheirlittlesistersYeye,nine,andDidine,15months.
“Whenourhousefelldown,IthoughtIwasgoingtodie,”Kikirecalls.Ontheirfifthdayintheruins,hesays,“Isawmybrotherdierightnexttome.”HeremembersweepingasSabrinacoveredlittleTititewithherT-shirt.
