Whenwelookatarealisticpainting—aportraitofahistoricalfigure—weacceptbyconventionthattheportraitrepresentsarealpersonandactualobjects.Whenthatconventionisdenied,asinMagritte’spipepaintings,thepointisnottoremindusthatpaintingsarenotreal.Thatmuchistruebuttrivial.Thepointistochallengethebeliefthateverythingoutsidetheframeisreal.
TheenemyofartistslikeMagritteisnaiverealism—thedoggedassumptionthatthehumansensoryapparatusaccuratelyrecordstheoneandonlyrealworld,ofwhichthehumanbraincanmakebutoneaccuratemodel.Thetruth,ofcourse,isthatnobodycangrasprealitywhole,thateachperson'suniverseistosomeextentunique,andthatthiscircumstancemakesitimpossibleforustoprovethatthereisbutonetruereality.
Ifmodernartistshavelaboredtocallattentiontothefactthatourunderstandingofrealityislimitedandvariegated,sotoohavemodernscientists.Manypeoplearesurprisedtohearthis.Theythinkofscienceasacollectionofhard
factsminedfrombedrockreality,throughaprocessasuncreativeascoincollecting.Thescientists,however,havecometoknowbetter.Astronomersunderstandthat
eachactofobservation—photographingagalaxy,takinganultravioletspectrumofanexplodingstar—extractsbutasmallpieceofthewhole,andthatamontageofmanysuchimagesisstillonlyarepresentation,apaintingifyouwill.Thequantumphysicistsgofurther:
