AfarewelltoArmsisoneofthemostoutstandingworkswrittenbyHemingway.Thenovelisagreatmasterpieceindoomaswellasatragedyinmodernsense.ThisthesisiswrittentostudydifferentsymbolicmeaningandrevealthenewinsinuationofsymbolicobjectsbyfirstlyintroducingHemingwayandhislivingbackgrounds,thenanalysingdifferentcharactersandsimilaritiesofhisworks,reviewingthecontentsofAFarewelltoArms,andespeciallyfocusingonanalysingHenry,Catherine,therain,themountain,andthearms.
Thethesisiswrittentoenablereaderstogetabetterunderstandingofsymbolismpresentedinthisnovelandtocomprehendtheeternalcharmofthisnovel,knowingthegenuinepurposeofHemingway'

AftertheWorldWar1hadbrokenout,HemingwayjoinedtheservicearmyofAmericanRedCrossSociety.HewasthenseriouslyinjuredbyanexplodingbombinanightwhenhewasthrowinghimselfintotheItalyWar.Afterthewar,Hemingwaywasgrantedasilvermedal.Alongwiththeglory,237piecesofscarsandindeliblydemonicmemoryofwarweredeeplyengravedinhisbodyandmind.
ItwassaidthatwhenHemingwayreturnedhome,neitherdidhewanttofindajob,nordidhewanttostudyinauniversity.Heconfinedhimselftoexhaustion,dissatisfactionandannoyance.ItwasthefirstWorldWar
