IvisitedNewYorkCitywithmyfamilyin2009andjoinedthecity’sannualHalloweenParadedownthe6thAvenue.Itwasquiteaspectacle.Peoplegotallgussiedupforthespookiestoftheholidays.Infact,thereweretwowaysonecanenjoytheevent,eitherasaparticipantorasanonlooker.Ifyoudressedupinacostume,youcanparticipateintheparadeandmarchdowntheroute.Unfortunately,Ididn’thaveanycostume,Icouldonlywatch.Asanonlooker,Istoodamongthepackedcrowdbehindthepolicebarricades.Someeagerfellowon-lookersclimbeduptreesforabetterview.Afewevenjumpedoverthebarricadeswhenthepoliceturnedround.Creepyghoulsandgiantpuppetsweremarchingdownthestreetandeveryonewascheering.Itwassofunandweenjoyedagreatdeal.Lookingback,amongallotherpubliceventsthatIwentto,thisoneleftthedeepestimpression.Ithinkthereasonsaretwofolds.One,wedidnothavethiskindoffestivityhereinChina.ItfeltsostrangetoaChineseguytowatchpeopledressedascorpsesandmonstersandeventoiletsandatthesametimeenjoythemselves.TothemoreconservativeChineseminds,thepartyseemedtobethegreatest"culturalshock".Second,Iwasamazedbythecreativedesignsofthecostume.Ialsofelttheworry-freefunandhappinessfromthepeopleallaroundme.IwillneverforgettheNewYorkers’creativityandthe“inthemoment”attitude.MaybethisiswhyNewYorkCityissogreat.
