AnneFrankwasbornonjune12,1929inFrankfurt,Germany.Atthattimethejewishcommunityformedanimportantpartofthecity’seconomicandculturalsuccess.Herfather,ottoFrank,wasarespectedbusinessmanwhosefamilyhadlivedinthecityformanygenerations.Annewaswelltakengoodcareofwhenshewasyoung.However,thefamilymovedtoHolland,whosepeoplewelcomedthemafterHitlerandtheNaziPartyrosetopowerin1934.
TheNaziPartyruledGermanyfrom1933to1945.oneoftheirkeypolicieswastokillallthejewsinEurope.whenjewswerefound,theyweresenttoconcentrationcampstobekilled.Toavoidthisterriblefate,somejewishfamilieswenttohiding,oftenwiththehelpofnon-jewishfriends.AnnewasforcetoleaveherschoolbecauseoftheGermaninvasion.Itwasinjuly1942thatottoFrankmadeplanstohidehisfamilyinthe“attic”,whichisusedtostoreseldom-usedthings.
