AspartoftheformerSovietUnion,theurbanismandarchitectureofBaku,thecapitalofAzerbaijanontheWesterncoastoftheCaspianSea, washeavilyinfluencedbytheplanningofthatera.Sinceitsindependencein1991,Azerbaijanhasinvestedheavilyinmodernsingand developingBaku’sinfrastructureandarchitecture,departingfromitslegacyofnormativeSovietModernism.
ZahaHadidArchitectswasappointedasdesignarchitectsoftheHeydarAliyevCenterfollowingacompetitionin2007.TheCenter,designed tobecometheprimarybuildingforthenation’sculturalprograms,breaksfromtherigidandoftenmonumentalSovietarchitecturethatisso prevalentinBaku,aspiringinsteadtoexpressthesensibilitiesofAzericultureandtheoptimismofanationthatlookstothefuture.
ThedesignoftheHeydarAliyevCenterestablishesacontinuous,fluidrelationship
betweenitssurroundingplazaandthebuilding’sinterior.Theplaza,asthegroundsurface;accessibletoallaspartofBaku’surbanfabric, risestoenvelopanequallypublicinteriorspaceanddefineasequenceofeventspacesdedicatedtothecollectivecelebrationofcontemporary andtraditionalAzericulture.Elaborateformationssuchasundulations,bifurcations,folds,andinflectionsmodifythisplazasurfaceintoan architecturallandscapethatperformsamultitudeoffunctions:
welcoming,embracing,anddirectingvisitorsthroughdifferentlevelsoftheinterior. Withthisgesture,thebuildingblurstheconventionaldifferentiationbetweenarchitecturalobjectandurbanlandscape,buildingenvelopeand urbanplaza,figureandground,interiorandexterior.
Fluidityinarchitectureisnotnewtothisregion.InhistoricalIslamicarchitecture,rows,grids,orsequencesofcolumnsflowtoinfinityliketreesin aforest,establishingnon-hierarchicalspace.Continuouscalligraphicandornamentalpatternsflowfromcarpetstowalls,wallstoceilings, ceilingstodomes,establishingseamlessrelationshipsandblurringdistinctionsbetweenarchitecturalelementsandthegroundtheyinhabit.
Ourintentionwastorelatetothathistoricalunderstandingofarchitecture,notthroughtheuseofmimicryoralimitingadherencetothe iconographyofthepast,butratherbydevelopingafirmlycontemporaryinterpretation,reflectingamorenuancedunderstanding.Responding tothetopographicsheerdropthatformerlysplitthesiteintwo,theprojectintroducesapreciselyterracedlandscapethatestablishes alternativeconnectionsandroutesbetweenpublicplaza,building,andundergroundparking.Thissolutionavoidsadditionalexcavationand landfill,andsuccessfullyconvertsaninitialdisadvantageofthesiteintoakeydesignfeature.
Geometry,structure,materiality
Oneofthemostcriticalyetchallengingelementsoftheprojectwasthearchitecturaldevelopmentofthebuilding’sskin.Ourambitiontoachieve asurfacesocontinuousthatitappearshomogenous,requiredabroadrangeofdifferentfunctions,constructionlogicsandtechnicalsystems hadtobebroughttogetherandintegratedintothebuilding’senvelope.Advancedcomputingallowedforthecontinuouscontroland communicationofthesecomplexitiesamongthenumerousprojectparticipants.
TheHeydarAliyevCenterprincipallyconsistsoftwocollaboratingsystems:
aconcretestructurecombinedwithaspaceframesystem.Inorder toachievelarge-scalecolumn-freespacesthatallowthevisitortoexperiencethefluidityoftheinterior,verticalstructuralelementsareabsorbed bytheenvelopeandcurtainwallsystem.Theparticularsurfacegeometryfostersunconventionalstructuralsolutions,suchastheintroduction ofcurved‘bootcolumns’toachievetheinversepeelofthesurfacefromthegroundtotheWestofthebuilding,andthe‘dovetail’taperingofthe cantileverbeamsthatsupportthebuildingenvelopetotheEastofthesite.
Thespaceframesystemenabledtheconstructionofafree-formstructureandsavedsignificanttimethroughouttheconstructionprocess,while hesubstructurewasdevelopedtoincorporateaflexiblerelationshipbetweentherigidgridofthespaceframeandthefree-formedexterior claddingseams.Theseseamswerederivedfromaprocessofrationalizingthecomplexgeometry,usage,andaestheticsoftheproject.Glass FibreReinforcedConcrete(GFRC)andGlassFibreReinforcedPolyester(GFRP)werechosenasidealcladdingmaterials,astheyallowforthe powerfulplasticityofthebuilding’sdesignwhilerespondingtoverydifferentfunctionaldemandsrelatedtoavarietyofsituations:
plaza, transitionalzonesandenvelope.
Continuedinthisarchitecturalcomposition,ifthesurfaceisthemusic,thentheseamsbetweenthepanelsaretherhythm.Numerousstudies werecarriedoutonthesurfacegeometrytorationalizethepanelswhilemaintainingcontinuitythroughoutthebuildingandlandscape.The seamspromoteagreaterunderstandingoftheproject’sscale.Theyemphasizethecontinualtransformationandimpliedmotionofitsfluid geometry,offeringapragmaticsolutiontopracticalconstructionissuessuchasmanufacturing,handling,transportationandassembly;andansweringtechnicalconcernssuchasaccommodatingmovementduetodeflection,externalloads,temperaturechange,seismicactivityandwindloading.
Toemphasizethecontinuousrelationshipbetweenthebuilding’sexteriorandinterior,thelightingoftheHeydarAliyevCenterhasbeenvery carefullyconsidered.Thelightingdesignstrategydifferentiatesthedayandnightreadingofthebuilding.Duringtheday,thebuilding’svolume reflectslight,constantlyalteringtheCenter’sappearanceaccordingtothetimeofdayandviewingperspective.Theuseofsemi-reflectiveglass givestantalizingglimpseswithin,arousingcuriositywithoutrevealingthefluidtrajectoryofspacesinside.Atnight,thischaracterisgradually transformedbymeansoflightingthatwashesfromtheinteriorontotheexteriorsurfaces,unfoldingtheformalcompositiontorevealitscontentandmaintainingthefluiditybetweeninteriorandexterior.Aswithallofourwork,theHeydarAliyevCenter’sdesignevolvedfromourinvestigationsandresearchofthesite’stopographyandthe Center’srolewithinitsbroaderculturallandscape.Byemployingthesearticulaterelationships,thedesignisembeddedwithinthiscontext; unfoldingthefutureculturalpossibilitiesforthenation.

Thecommunitycenterhostsarangeseminarsandevents,providingamuchneededdestinationforindividualsandorganizationstocongregate.
Thedesignischaracterizedbyrepeatedwoodenlouversthatencloseashadedvolumeatgroundlevel,servingasabufferzonebetween internalandexternalspace.
Throughouttheplan,areasofplantationallowthebuildingtoestablishadirectandintimaterelationshipwithnature.
Theuseoftimbercontinuesinternallywithplywoodfurnishingsandfittingsincorporatedwithinastudiothatisarticulatedacrosstwolevels.
Astaircaseleadstoacomfortableloungeareasituatedattheuppermoststory,whichprovidesarelaxedandhospitableenvironmentforitsvisitors.
●OlympicShootingVenue/MagmaArchitecture
TheLondonShootingVenuewillaccommodatetheeventsin10,25and50mSportShooting atthe2012OlympicandParalympicGamesinthesoutheastLondondistrictofWoolwich. ThefirstGoldMedaloftheLondonOlympicGameswillbeawardedatthevenueforwomen’s10mAirPistolonthe28thJuly2012.Aftertheeventthethreetemporaryand mobilebuildingswillbedismantledanditisplannedtorebuildtheminGlasgowforthe2014CommonwealthGames.
Shootingisasportinwhichtheresultsandprogressofthecompetitionarehardly visibletotheeyeofthespectator.Thedesignoftheshootingvenuewasdrivenbythe desiretoevokeanexperienceofflowandprecisioninherentintheshootingsport throughthedynamicallycurvingspace.Allthreerangeswereconfiguredinacrisp, whitedoublecurvedmembranefaçadestuddedwithvibrantlycoloredopenings.Aswellas animatingthefaçadethesedotsoperateastensioningnodes.The18.000m²of phthalate-freepvcmembranefunctionsbestinthisstretchedformatasitpreventsthe facade fromflappinginthewind.Theopeningsalsoactasventilationintakeand doorwaysatgroundlevel.Thefreshandlightappearanceofthebuildingsenhancesthe festiveandcelebrativecharacteroftheOlympicevent.TheshootingvenueisnotsituatedintheOlympicPark,buthasitsownlocationin WoolwichonthegroundsofthehistoricRoyalArtilleryBarracks.Itisestimatedthat morethan104.000 spectatorswillwatchthecompetitions.Thethreebuildingscomprise 3.800seatsdividedbetweentwopartiallyenclosedrangesforthe25and10/50m qualifyingroundsandafullyenclosedfinalsrange.Togethertheyformacampusonthe greenfield.Theirupto107mlongfacadesrefertothestructuredlengthoftheRoyal ArtilleryBarracksbuilding,buthavetheirowncontemporaryarchitecturalexpression.’
Guidedbythehighrequirementsfromtheclient,theOlympicDeliveryAuthority, sustainabilitywasakeyfactorinshapingthedesign.Allmaterialswillbereusedor recycled.Allthreeofthevenuesarefullymobile,everyjointhasbeendesignedsoit canbereassembled;andnocompositematerialsoradhesiveswereused.Inaddition,the semitransparentfacadesontwoofthethreerangesreducetheneedforartificial lightingandtheventilationisfullynatural.Thetensioningdetailwasachieved throughanefficientconfigurationofmodularsteelcomponentscommonlyusedin tempora
