一.Thesigficanceoftheselectedtopic:
Withthedevelopmentofeconomyandtheincreaseofcommunication,peoplepaymoreattentiontotheskillsoflanguage.Languageandculturearecloselyrelatedtoeachother,andlanguageisthecarrierandreflectorofculture.Euphemismisawidespreadlinguisticphenomenonindifferentcultures.Itismoresubtleawaytoexpressembarrasingwordsortaboos.Ithelpsusexpressourideasorpointsinaproperway.EnglisheuphemismandChineseeuphemismreflectstheculturalandlinguisticsimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweenthetwocountries.Manylinguistsandscholarsathomeandabroadhavestudiedeuphemismfromdifferentperspectives,suchassemantics,sociolinguistics,rhetorics,psychologyandpragmatics.However,thepreviousresearchesaremainlydoneinasinglelanguage.WhilecontrastivestudiesonbothChineseandEnglisheuphemismsarecomparativelylimited.ThisthesismakesacontrastivestudyofEnglishandChineseeuphemismsfromdifferentperspectives.Therefoer,thepaperwillenrichpreviousresearches.BymakingacontrastiveanalysisofeuphemisminEnglishandChinese,wecanhaveabetterunderstandingoftheEnglishandChineseculturesandtheninterpretanduseeuphemismappropriatelyincross-culturalcommunication.Itwillprovideguidancesforkeepingagoodpersonalrelationship.
Researchstatus:
Inthe1580s,theEnglishwriterGeorgeBluntfirstusedtheword“Euphemism”anddefinedit“agoodorinfavorableinterpretationofabadword”.AndthentheAmericanlinguist-MenkendiscussedthecausesofhundredsofEnglisheuphemisms’origionandpopularityinaccordingtoAmericanhistoryandculture.TheworkswrittenbyBritishlinguist-HughRawsontracedbacktotheresearchhistoryofeuphemismandthewriteralsodiscussedthedefination,classification,characteristicsoftheeuphemismextensively.Anotherlinguist-Leechappliedtheprincipleofpolitenessastheprincipleofeuphemism.
In1970sor19780s,withtheintroductionoftheforeignsociolinguisticstoourcountry,thespecialsocialfunctionofeuphemismattractedournativelinguisticresearcheralot.In21stcentury,theresearchersenlargedtherangeofstudy,theystudythesocialfunction,characteristics,formaionandsoon.HuMeilandiscussedtheusageofeuphemismandrelationshipbetweenindirectnessandpolitenessofeuphemismfromtheperspectiveofpragmatics.WeiYuehongstudiedeuphemismbycombiningtheelementsofcognization,societyandculture.FangPingdiscussedthepositiveandnegtivesocialfunctionofeuphemism.
Fromwhatwehavementionedabove,thestudyofeuphemismhasmanyperspectivesanditissopopularatopicthatattractsalotofscholarsandlnguists.
Preparation:
Firstofall,IshouldfindwhichaspectIaminterestedinandthendecidethetopicwhichshouldbenovelandconcise.Itisverynecessarytoseeiftherearerelevantmaterialsavailable.
Secondly,Ineedtotalkwithmytutorandaskhimforsomeadvices.
Thirdly,itisbettertoconstructtheframeworkofthepaperaheadoftime.
Fourthly,Ineedbegintotalkaboutthewritingofthepaper,suchasthespecificformat,thearrangementofscheduleandsoon.
Inthefollowing,alotofrevisionsareinevitable.
Propblemsandsolutions:
Theprocessofwritingpaperisnoteasy.Itisnormalthatwemaycomeacrosssomeproblemsanddifficulties.Firstofall,beforewriting,adefinitedirectionisnecessary.Then,inaccordingtothedirection,Ishouldchooseanveryinterestiongandfamiliartopic.Ineedtocollectrelevantmaterialswhichshouldbetothepointandeffective.,otherwiseitwllbeeasytoberegardedasplagiarism.Therefore,theprocessofcollectingmaterialsisanveryimportantpart.Itactsasthebasis.Whenwritingthepaper,Imaymakemanymistakesbecauseofourlimitedgrammaticalandlexicalknowledge.Imustclassify,analyzeandconcludethosematerials.Afterthat,Ihavetoinnovateourthoughtsandcomeupwithnewassumptionsandviews.Continuousreflectionandmodifinationcontributetothepaticularpaper.Makingthepapemorelogicisverynecessary.Whenmeetingdifficulties,Iusuallycalmdown,thinktwiceandreflectmymethods.Askingforteachers’helpandcommunicatewiththemarealsogoodchoices.
Methodology:
Referenceisagoodchoice.Ithelpsmeknowwhatthelinguistsandscholarshaveresearched.Itgivesmeagooddirection.Ineedtoreadalotofbooksordocumentsconcerningeuphemism.Ialsomakefullusethemediaoftelevisionandlibrarytosearchformaterials.Internetisalaoagoodmediumtogetaccesstoalotusefulinformationsincludingthepastandthepresent.Teachers’advicesplaysacrucialroleinmypaperwriting.Exernplificationandanalysisareappliedinthepaperproperly.Theoriesandexamplesarecombinedtogetherperfectly.
Frameworkofthepaper:
一.Thefirstpartisaboutabstract.Itwillbreiflyintroducethesubjectmatter-euphemism,thepurposeofthestudy,thewaytheresearchiscarriedout,someimportantfindings,theimplicationsandaconclusion.Itisthwindowofthepaper.Youcanhaveageneralunderstandingofthecontent.
二.Inthefollowingistheintroduction.Itwillfocusontheeuphemism’sbackgroundinformationmoredeeply.Iwillreviewthepreviousstudyandfindsomedeficienciesinthem.ThenIwillintroducemypaperwhichisdifferentfromthem.
1.Firstly,theorigionanddefinationofeuphemismincludingtheorigionanddefinationofChineseeuphemismandtheorigionanddefinationofEnglisheuphemism.
2.Theclassificationofeuphemismwhichincludesthepositiveeuphemismandnegativeeuphemism,theunconsciouseuphemismandconsciouseuphemismandotherclassificationofeuphemism.
3.AcontrastivestudybetweenChineseandEnglisheuphemism.
3.1.Intermsofformation-thephoneticdevice,thelexicaldevice,thefigurativedeviceandthegrammaticaldevice.
