26pmthisafternoon,boundforCharlotteAirportinNorthCarolina.Ithad155peopleaboard.Thirtyto45secondsaftertake-off,aflockofgeeseapparentlyflewintotheplane,causingittolosepowerinbothenginesandoneenginetocatchfire.WithoutpowertheplanewasunabletoreturntoLaGuardiaAirportandthepilotdecidedtolandintheHudsonRiverinordertoavoidcrashinginapopulatedarea.TwominuteslatertheplanemadeasuccessfullandingintheHudsonandpassengerswereabletoclimboutthroughtheemergencyexits.
Theplaneimmediatelystartedtakinginwaterbutfortunatelywatertaxisandboatsthathadseenthecrashwerewaitingbytheaircraft.Passengersandcrewstoodonthewingsoftheplaneintheicycoldwaterandwerehelpedintotheboats.Overthenexthour,asNewYorkwatchedtheeventontelevision,everyoneontheplane,includingababy,weretakentohospitalsfortreatment,mostlybecauseoftheextremecold,Theirinjuriesarenotreportedtobeserious.Oneofthepassengers,AlbertoPanero,saidpeoplehadbegunprayingastheplaneapproachedtheriverbutthateveryonehadstayedclam.
ThepilotoftheplanehasbeennamedasChesleySullenberger.Aged57,hehas29yearsexperienceofflyingandatonetimehadbeenaUSfighterpilot.Sullenbergerwasthelasttoleavetheplaneandwalkedupanddownittwicetomakesureitwasemptybeforeclimbingout.Hehasalreadybeendescribedasahero.TheGovernerofNewYork,Davidpatersm,saidatanewsconferencethisafternoon,“Ibelievenowwe'vehadamiracleontheHudson.Thispilot,somehowwithoutanyengines,wassomehowabletolandthisplaneandperhapswithoutanyinjuriestothepassengers.”
Itisthoughtthatthesurvivalofallonboardisbecausetheplanedidnotbreakupwhenithitwaterandbecauseoftheimmediatelyarrivalofthewatertaxisandboats.
