martinlutherking,jr.(january15,1929–april4,1968)wasanamericanclergyman,activist,andprominentleaderintheafrican-americancivilrightsmovement.heisbestknownforbeinganiconicfigureintheadvancementofcivilrightsintheunitedstatesandaroundtheworld,usingnonviolentmethodsfollowingtheteachingsofmahatmagandhi.kinghasbecomeanationaliconinthehistoryofmodernamericanliberalism.
