本义“赶上;弥补”,这里指“(人们在一起)叙旧交谈”,其后往往用介词on,表示“(在……方面)赶上,补上。

Over:
本意“在…….上方”,但两个物体并不接触。
如:
myhandisoverthetable.我的手在桌子的上方。
手与桌子没有接触。
但是overthesummer的over的意思是“在…..期间”,overthesummer:
在夏季里。

朋友寒暄,问“有什么新鲜事发生”:

表示出自己很吃惊,也很感兴趣,从而调动Carol继续说下。
Master'sdegreeinEconomics:
经济学硕士学位。
介词in表示“在(某一门学科)”。
Carol:

Listen,I'vereallygottorun,butI'dliketohearmoreaboutyourplans.We'llhavetogettogethersoon.
Anita:
yes.Wereallyshould.
“listen”是想引起对方注意,告诉对方要转换话题了,或者要说一些新的信息。
I'vereallygottorun.“我真的得走了。
”run在此不能翻译成“跑”,应该是“离开”的意思。
havegotto=haveto。
不能按照汉语的字面意思,说成Iwanttogo(“跟你聊天很没劲,我想走了。
”)I'vereallygottogo,表示形式所趋,迫不得已才这么做的。
说完这句话之后通常会告诉对方自己要走的原因,比如说becauseIhavetomeetmyprofessoratlibraryat3o'clock.告诉对方你是因为和教授约好了三点在图书馆见面,而现在已经2:
50了,这样的理由就很容易被对方接受。
有些中国学生喜欢按照汉语的对话习惯说,“我有点事,先走了。
”即:
Ihavesomethingtodo,soIhavetogonow.这样,他没有把具体要走的原因说出来,就有可能引起外国朋友的误会,觉得你像是随便找个借口要走了,他们会觉得很不愉快。
I'dliketohearmoreaboutyourplans.文中Carol虽然没有具体的解释自己必须要走的原因,但是她说了这句话:
告诉Anita,其实她对Anita的新决定很感兴趣,希望有机会能听到更多的信息。
这也不失为一种停止对话的好方法。
Wellhavetogettogethersoon.“过一段时间我们最好能聚一聚。
”gettogether:
“聚会、小聚一下”。
Carol的这句话并不是十分明确的邀请,因为她没有说出具体的时间和地点以及活动的内容,所以Anita也没有必要问when(什么时候)、where(什么地点)等问题,也只是说了一句yes,wereallyshould。
这样比较含混的话。

“它怎么样?
”这三句都是常用的问别人对事务的观点,可互换。
本单元练习的回答方式是itis/wasoneofthe+形容词最高级+名词+(含有完成时的)定语从句,“它是我所做过的最……的一件事。
”Itwasoneofthenicestvacationswe'veevertaken.“它是我所度过的最好的假期。
”“假期”:
[美]Vacation≠vocation(“职业”),[英]holiday。

附加疑问句:
用来确认信息时,是真正在询问问题,希望得到相应的信息,一般读作升调。
其构成一般是:
如果句子的前半部分用的是肯定形式,后面的附加疑问句则用否定形式;如果前半部分用的是否定形式,后面的附加疑问句则用肯定形式。

Asamatteroffact=infact,“事实上”,常用来告知一些详细信息。
acoupleof:
“少数几个…….”。
Thriller:
“恐怖小说”,
by:
“由……写的(/著的)”。
汤姆·克兰西(TomClancy)是全球最富盛名的军事惊悚小说大师。
他的作品改编成电影之后,都很叫座。
像《猎杀红色十月》、《爱国者游戏》及《燃眉追击》等影片,均出自他之手。

该附加疑问句的目的不是询问问题,而只是说话人在阐发自己的观点或看法,希望知道听话人是否同意自己的看法,这时后面的附加成分用降调来读。
这与我们刚才在对话B中所学的附加疑问句有点不同。
Ken:

IthoughtitwasOK:
“我觉得还行”,“马马虎虎”,即不坏但也说不上好。
Totellyouthetruth…表示说话人接下来想说的话是真实的,但往往可能又不是听话人所期望得到的答案,或者有点不太好的内容。
用这个词可以做一下缓冲,让听话人有点心理准备。
[eg.]Wewereinthesameclass,buttotellyouthetruth,Ididn’tlikeheratall.
Ididn’tthinkitwasthatexciting.=Ididn’tthinkitwasasexcitingasyouthought.我觉得它没有你说得那么刺激。
That:
修饰exciting,相当于一个程度副词,“那么”。
注意:
这样的否定回答是很委婉的,而很少用Youarewrong,这样很直接的粗鲁的方式批驳对方的观点。
关于如何去赞同别人的观点,大家可以看看Hiro对Mary的回答,这是一种方式。
也可以用yes,Iagreewithyou.如果你十分赞成某人的观点,可以说Ican’tagreemore(withyou).
Ihatetobreakthisup.“我真不想打断和你的谈话。
”breakup:
“停止或打断对(谈)话”。

常用来问朋友有没有新变化,其实what'snew?
后面还可以接at,再加上表示地点的名词。
routine:
“例行公事、日常公事”。
runinto:
“碰上、遇见”,在某处与某人无意间相遇,不期而遇”。

Startgraduateschool:
开始读研究生。
美国人常用Graduateschool来指研究生院;graduatestudent指的是研究生,而英国人更喜欢用postgraduate来指研究生。

break在此处的原意是“打破、突变。

Sound:
系动词,后面只能接形容词。
该句主语是出去吃饭这一主意,但在口语中这个结构常常省略主语。

2)Languagepointsinthedialogue
MachuPicchuisoneofthegreatmysteriesoftheworld.
Mystery:
可数名词,“神秘的事物”。
在文中它的前面是oneof,所以后面一定要加名词的复数形式,所以这里用了oneofthegreatmysteries。
它的形容词形式就是文中后一句中出现的mysterious,意思是“神秘的”。
ItisanancientcityonamountainhighinthePeruvianAndes.
highinthePeruvianAndes是mountain的修饰成分,是后置定语,highadv.用来修饰后面的介词短语
Abeautifulandmysterioussite,itiscompletelyisolated.
abeautifulandmysterioussite和it都指的是马丘比丘城,且它的位置应该放在it之后,做it的同位语,但为了强调把它的美丽与神秘,就把Abeautifulandmysterioussite放到了句子开头。
本文最后一段还有一句同位语,TheTempleoftheSun,perhapsthemostbeautifulstructure,isoneofthehighestpointsinthecity.这句话中,themostbeautifulstructure和theTempleoftheSun也是同位语,都是这句话的主语。

leadsomebodytoacertainplace:
“带某人到达某个地方”。
[Eg]:

leadto“导致,致使”。
[eg.]:
Hercarelessnessledtothisaccident.这场事故是由她的疏忽引起的。
ruin“废墟;毁灭”,用于此意义时,常用复数形式ruins,既指物理形态上的“废墟”,也可指抽象的“破坏、毁灭”,常与介词in一起连用。
[eg.]Itwasverysplendidonce,butitisinruinsnow.这里过去曾辉煌一时,但是现在已经是废墟一片了。
coveredwithjunglegrowth:
过去分词短语来形容废墟的状态,指出这片废墟上面是一片荆棘丛生。
Cover…with:
“用……覆盖……”:
coveredwith“由……覆盖“;Somesayitmayoncehavebeencoveredwithgems.。
有人说太阳庙可能一度镶嵌着珠宝。
growth“生长物,植物”。

Intheabsenceof:
“缺乏、不存在.”。
“absence”原意是“缺席”形容词形式是absent。
intheabsence:
“没有…的情况下”[eg.]Themeetingwasheldintheabsenceoftheirmanager.会议就在经理没有出席的情况下举行了。
ItisgenerallyagreedthatthecitywasbuiltduringthefifteenthcenturyandabandonedinthesixteenthcenturyatthetimeoftheSpanishconquest.
itis…that是强调句型的基本形式,但是这里这个句子不是强调句型,it这里是一个形式主语,句子真正主语是后面that引导的句子,isagreed是整个句子的谓语动词部分。
英语中经常会用it来做形式主语,引导一个句子,目的是为避免出现头重脚轻现象,避免主语太长而后面的谓语动词太短的现象,因此把整个主语放到句子最后,而将谓语动词置于相对较前的位置。
ItmayhavebeenbuiltasafortresstoprotecttheIncasfromtheconqueringSpaniardsorfromneighboringtribeswhoattackedMachuPicchu.
may+have+pp(过去分词):
表示对过去某事的猜测,而这种猜测的可能性又不见得是很大的。
因为作者在猜测修建城堡的原因时,没有任何的文字记载可以参照,所以他不是很肯定。
“fortress”:
“坚固的城堡”。
must+have+pp(过去分词)表示对过去发生事情的猜测时我们还可以使用情态动词,但是在使用上must的语气要比may更为肯定。
比如,早晨起来,看到地面时湿的,那我们自然就会推测说昨晚肯定是下雨了,这时会说Itmusthaverainedlastnight.这种语气相对于mayhavebeen而言是非常肯定的。
