AdvancedListeningandSpeakinginBusinessEnglishcourseisaselectivelanguagecourseopentoalltheundergraduates.ConductedinmultimediaclassroomandtaughtinEnglish,itcombinesEnglishlanguageskilltrainingwithbusinessknowledgeofvariousfields.Thecoursecovers18unitsofbusiness-relatedtopicsandfocusesonhelpingstudentsimprovetheiroverallEnglishlisteningandspeakingproficiency.Studentsshouldgothroughaseriesoftrainingproceduresonthefollowingaspects:
Listeningtobusinessnewsandnewsreports,specialcoverageandinterviews;doingcomprehensionexercisesinclassrelatedtotheirlisteningmaterials;gettingfamiliarwiththerelevantbusinessterminologyandlearningtoexpresstheirideasaccuratelyandsmoothlywithbusinessterminologiesandfinallyparticipatinginclassactivities(conversation,simulation,presentation,teamdiscussion,etc.).Theobjectivesofthecourseare:
1)Toupgradeandreinforcestudents’listeningandspeakingcompetencethroughvarietiesofin-classactivitiessuchasdictation,note-taking,summarizing,andmimicking.2)Torefreshandlearnthebasicknowledgeoninternationaltrade,economics,financeandmanagement.3)Toenhancetheirabilitytoacquireinformationofthelatestdevelopmentofbusinessandlearntomakequalityanalysisandcommentsonthecurrenteconomicaffairsorally.4)Toempowerstudents’communicativecompetencetomakelogical,criticalandexpressivespeechesandanalysis.

TeachingObjectives
1.Studentsshouldbeabletolearnandusebusinessterminologies—thenewwordsandexpressionsappearedbeforethelisteningmaterialsofPartA,PartB,andPartC.andturnthesewordsintotheiractivevocabulary.
2.Studentsshouldlistentoavarietyoflisteningmaterialssuchasbusinessnews,lectures,interviews,talkshows,andreportsandlearntomasterthefivebasiclisteningskills:
skimming(gistandmainidea),scanning(specificinformation);guessingthenewwordsfromthelisteningcontext;inferring(listenforimpliedmeaninghiddeninthecontext);short-termorworkingmemory.
3.Studentsshouldtakelisteningasbrainstorminginputandideasandlearntousetheseideastopracticetheirpublicspeakingability,i.e.theyshouldbeabletotalkabouttherelevantbusinessissuesinfivelevelsofexpressivespeakingmanner:
fluency,accuracy,good-organization,appropriatenessandconfidentdelivery.
4.Throughoutthewholesemesterstudentsshouldimprovetheirshort-termandlong-termmemorybydoingactivelistening:
whichmeanstheyshouldconstantlyanalyze,predict,induce,deduce,generalizeandsummarizethepassagebydoingvarietyofactivitiessuchasdictationandmemorizationexercises.Itisevidentthatagoodmemorycanhelpstudentsimprovetheirlisteningcomprehensionperformances.
5.FinallystudentsshouldformagoodhabitoffollowingworldbusinessnewsbywatchingorlisteningtoBBC,CNN,ChinaRadioInternationalandmanyothernewsprogramsavailableontheNet.
