Thisisthefirstteachingperiodofthisunit.Atthebeginningoftheclass,theteachercanleadinthetopicoftheunitbyhavingafreetalkwithstudentsaboutthebackgroundknowledge,talkingaboutMarkTwainandhisplay.
MarkTwainisprobablyoneofthefewAmericanwriterswithwhomstudentsarealreadyfamiliar.TheWarmingUpisintendedtodiscoverjusthowmuchstudentsknowaboutthis19thcenturywriterandletthosewhodon’tknowabouthimknowabouthimbeforetheyreadtheplay.TheteachercanusethisparttointroduceinformationthatChinesestudentsshouldhave.
Exercise1inthePre-readingprovidesstudentswithanimportantchoice.Forsome,knowingwhattheywoulddowiththemoneyiseasytodecide.Forothers,itmayposearealdilemma,especiallyiftheyfeelobligatedtohelpotherswiththemoney.Whateverchoicestudentsmakehere,theyshouldbereadytooffertheirclassmatesagoodreasonforit.Exercise2istocheckwhetherstudentshavereadthestoryorhaveseenthefilmandforstudentstobereadyforthenextpartReading.
ThereadingpassageisaplaywhichisadaptedfromMarkTwain’sshortstorybythesametitle.ItbrieflydescribesthatHenry,aSanFranciscobusinessman,isrescuedatseabyaBritishshipthattakeshimtoLondonwherehefindshimselfwithoutmoney,friends,ortheprospectofagoodjob.Hungryandalone,hewalksalongthestreetsofthecitywhenunexpectedlyheissummonedtoamansion.Tworichbrothers,RoderickandOliver,havemadeasecretbet.RoderickbelievesthatamancannotsurviveinthecityforamonthwithonlyamillionpoundbanknoteinhispossessionbutOliverbelieveshecan.TheplaytakesusalongonHenry’smisadventureswithhumorandsurprisetodiscoverwhowillwinthebet.
Studentsareencouragedtopreviewthetextandfindoutthenewwordsandstructuresthemselves.Theyshouldtrytoworkoutthemeaningofthenewwordsthroughthecontext.Thenifnecessary,theycanlookthemupinthedictionaryorturntotheteacherforhelp.
