Ina2015studybytheUniversityofNewSouthWales,videosofpeoplereadingapassageinthreedifferentUKaccentswereshowntoasecondgroupofpeople.Thegroupthenratedhowintelligenttheythoughtthereaderssounded.Thelowest-ratedaccentwastheBrummieaccent,nativetopeoplefromBirmingham,acitywhoseaccentisconsideredtheworkingclass.
However,thereisnoneedtobedisappointedthoughyouarenotspeakinginaRPaccent.Infact,doingtheoppositemayevengiveyouadvantages.
KongSeong-jae,25,isanInternetcelebrityfromSeoul.AfterstudyingintheUK,hepickedupseveralregionalaccents.He’snowfamousforhisonlinevideos,whereheshowsoffthevariousaccentshe’slearned.“BritishpeopleusuallygetreallyexcitedwhenIusesomeoftheirlocaldialectwords,andtheybecomemuchfriendlier.Ithinkitmakesabitofbondbetweenlocalpeopleandforeignerstospeakintheirlocalaccent,”hesaid.
