Theextensiveresearch,conductedinPatagoniafrom2013to2018,involvedattachinghigh-techflightrecorderstothebirds’wings.Thecollectedinformationwastoomuchtosendbackviathephoneorsatellitenetwork.Hence,theresearchershadtophysicallytakebackthedevices,whichweredesignedtofalloffthebirdsafteraweek.WhileaGPStrackerallowedthescientiststoconfirmtherecorders'exactlocations,gettingtothemwasnoeasytaskgivenPatagonia'sroughsurfacefeatures.
