AccordingtoastudypublishedinthejournalFrontiersinBehavioralNeuroscience,it’satypicalexperienceof“cuteaggression”.Theexperienceresultsfromthefightbetweenthebrain’s“emotionsystem”,whichimpels(驱使)peopletosqueezecutethings,andits“rewardsystem”whichdealswithfeelingsof“wanting”.
Inthestudy,54participantsbetweentheagesof18and40werepresentedwithfourgroupsofphotos.Twoofthegroupsofphotoswereofcutehumanbabiesandanimalsandtheothertwowereoflessadorableadulthumansandanimals.Astheparticipantslookedatthephotos,theresearcherswatchedtheirbrainactivities.
Accordingtotheresearchers,theparticipantsrewardsystemswerefoundtobeactiveastheylookedatthecutebabies,andtheyseemedtobeoverwhelmed.Bycontrast,therewardsystemsofthepeoplelookingatthelesscuteadultswerefoundtobeinactive,andtheyseemedtobelessimpelledbytheirrewardsystems.
Thissuggeststhatcutethingsactivatetheiremotionsystemsinsuchawaythatpeopleareoverwhelmedbytheexperienceofcuteness.Butrewardsystemsworkagainsttheseemotionsbycreatingthedesiretoprotectcutethings.
AsKatherineStavropoulos,theleadresearcherofthisstudyattheUniversityofCaliforniaintheUStoldScienceAlert,“Thecuteaggressionisthebrain’swayof‘bringingusbackdown’bybalancingourfeelingsofbeingoverwhelmed.”
Stavropouloscomparedthisprocessofbalancingtoanevolutionaryadaptation.Suchanadaptationmayhavetakenplacetoensurethatpeopleareabletocontinuetakingcareofcreaturestheyconsiderparticularlycute.
So,althoughcutebabiesandadorableanimalsmaylookcompletelyhelpless,theirvulnerableappearancemayinfacthelpthemtosurvive.
