IhavebeenteachinginthetownofCotney,asmalltownofabout10,000people,130milesnorthofVictoriaonVancouverIsland.I'vebeenteachingatthejuniorsecondarylevel,Grades7,8and9andaswell(as)theseniorsecondarylevel,Grades10,11and12.
Myinvolvementinextracurricularactivitieshasbeenquitebroad,primarilyinthesportsfield,butalsoinsupportingmanyoftheotherareasintheschool.Butletmegetintospecificsaboutwhatkindsofthingsareofferedinourschoolshere.
Wehavetwodifferentkindsofsportingactivities.Oneofthemiswhatwecallaninter-schoolactivitywhereoneschoolcompetesagainstanother.Andthatlevelofsportisreservedjustfortheeliteathletesoftheschool,theverygoodathletes.Wealsohaveanintramuralprogram,whichmeanswithinthewallsoftheschoolsothateverystudentintheschoolisinvitedtoparticipate.Itis,it'sfocusedlargelyonparticipationandmanyofourstudentsdoparticipate.Wehaveover60percentofourstudentbodyinvolvedinourintramuralprogram.
Butletmenotfocusjustonsports.Thereisanotherverylargeareaofextracurricularactivityinthemusicprogram.Themusicprogramisbrokenintotwomainparts.Oneisbandandoneischorus.Chorusisalsoknownaschoir.Butmostoftenwerefertoitaschorus.Weencouragemanystudentstobeinvolvedinmusic,butitisachoiceforthem,itisn'tcompulsory.Butwefeelthatbeinginvolvedinmusicisverygoodforthepersonaldevelopmentofourstudents,soweencourageitverymuch.Therearesomespecialtygroupsaswell.Thereisajazzband.Therearejazzsingers.
Thereareahostofotherextracurricularactivities.AndI'I1justrunthroughalist...Wehaveamathclubinourschool,wehaveascienceclub,wehaveanannualclub,wehaveanewspaperclub,wehaveanoutdoorsclub,wehaveachessclub,andwehaveacookingclub.
Thatsumsupthelistofactivities.ButIshouldtellyouwhyweoffertheseextracurricularactivities.Manyofourstudentscometoschoolonbuses.Seventypercentofourstudentstravelbybus.Only30percentcanwalktoschoolthatarecloseenoughtowalk.Theyreallylookforactivitiestofilltheirtimeinapositivewaybeforetheirbuscomeseachevening.Andsometimestheygettoschoolanhourbeforeclassesbegininthemorning,sotheyneedtofilltheirtimepositivelywitho
