THEelephantsofThailandusednevertobeshortofworkhaulingtimber.Butmostofthecountry'sforestshavebeencutdown,andloggingisnowbannedtosavethefewthatareleft.Thenumberofdomesticatedelephantsleftinthecountryisnowonly2,500orso,downfromabout100,000acenturyago.ThoughbeingthenationalanimalofThailandearnsanelephantplentyofrespect,thisdoesnotputgrassonthetable.Thaielephantsthesedaystaketouristsontreksorperformincircuses,andaresometimestobeseenbeggingforbananasonthestreetsofBangkok.
