Muchasithadoverthepast108years,thePostalServicesaidthatitwasinvitingAmericanchildrentowritelettersandtomailthemtotheNorthPole,usingaspecialaddressandZIPcodeandaffixingtheproperpostage.
Thisyear,however,theletterswillbeuploadedtotheOperationSantawebsite,solongastheyarelegibleandmakespecificrequestsforitemsliketoys,clothesorgames.StartingDecember4,postalcustomerscanthenreadthemandchoosetosendgiftswiththeirresponses,withasignaturesayingit’sfromSanta.
“Covid-19hascausedunduehardships,bothfinancialandemotional,tosomanyAmericansthisyear,”KimberlyFrum,aspokeswomanforthePostalService,saidinanemail.“Theprogramprovideskidsandfamilieswithanopportunitytoreceivegiftsduringtheholidaysfromanonymous,generouspostalcustomers.”
Thosecustomersusedtoreviewthelettersinperson,butOperationSantahasmovedlargelyonlineinrecentyearsafterapilotprogramin2017.By2019,theonlineoperationhadexpandedto15cities,includingNewYork,Chicago,DenverandGrandRapids,Michigan,to,“enhancetheabilityforgenerouspeopleacrossthenationtohelpthoseinneednomatterwheretheylive,”Frumsaid.
