Abstract
ByronisaneminentrepresentativeofEnglishliteratureinthe19thcentury.Byron’spoetryhasgreatinfluenceontheliteratureofthewholeworld.ByronhasenrichedEuropeanpoetrywithanabundanceofideas,images,artisticformsandinnovations.Hiswell-knownpoetrydemonstratesthecharmofromanticliteratureinhistime,andstillattractsmanyreadersofnowadays.HundredsofresearchpapersandbooksaboutByron’sworksappearedeachyearbothathomeandabroad.ThisthesisanalyzesthetendencyofOrientalisminByron’spoetry,through“oriental”imagesand“oriental”sceneriesinhisworks,ByronvividshowpeoplehisOrientalismtendency.
Thisthesisfallsintofourparts.Thefirstpartisintroduction,whichincludethecriticalviewofByron’spoetryathomeandabroadandtheargument,researchmethodandthesignificanceofthethesis.ThesecondpartdescribesorientalismandByron’sorientalexperience.ThethirdpartfocusestheOrientalisttendencyinByron’spoetry-people.Thelastpartdrivestoaconclusion.

摘要
拜伦是十九世纪英国文学的杰出代表.拜伦的诗歌对整个世界都有很大的影响,他诗歌中的思想,形象,艺术形式和创新性丰富了整个欧洲诗坛。
他生动的诗歌在当时展现了浪漫主义文学的魅力,而且对今天的读者也具有很大的吸引力。
如今国内外都有数百千研究拜伦作品的著作出现。
这篇论文就拜伦的东方主义思想倾向而言,通过拜伦作品中的“东方”形象和“东方”场景向人们形象生动的展现了他的东方主义思想倾向。
这篇论文可分为四部分。
第一部分是关于引言,包括国内外对拜伦诗歌的批判性观点,研究方法及研究意义。
第二部分描述了拜伦的东方主义思想倾向和地方经历。
第三部分从人物的角度描述了拜伦的东方主义思想倾向。
第四部分得出全文结论和意义及总结。

I.Introduction
1.1ThecriticalviewsofByron’spoetryathomeandabroad
GeorgeGordonByroniswellknownasaromanticpoetinthe19thcentury.Wecannotdenythatheisalsowellknownforhisnotoriousloveaffairs.HeisoneofeminentrepresentativesofEnglishliteratureandheleftabundantofmarvelousworksforthewholeworld.FromthepublicationofChildeHarold’sPilgrimagetotheendofhislife,hehadcreatedmorethanonehundredpoems,includingaseriesofnarrativepoetry,satiricalpoetryandsomelyrics.Recently,therearehundredsofworksstudyingonByron’spoetrybothathomeandabroad.Therearemanycategoriesofstudy,suchasByronicHero,commentariesonByron,Byron’sviewonthefemalecharactersandhisworks.Althoughscholarshavedonemuchresearch,littleattentionhasbeenattachedtoOrientalisminByron’sliteraryworks.ThisthesisisgoingtoanalyzetheByron’sOrientalismtendency.
Hisworks,suchasDongJuan,Orientaltales,ChildeHarold’sPilgrimageallrevealByron’stendencyofOrientalism.AlthoughtherearesomefewarticlesonByron’sOrientalism,threearticleshaverecentlypublishedtostudyByron’sOrientalism.
First,FengXupublishedanarticlein2003wherehepointedoutthatromanticexoticismusestheOrientasamysterioussymbolandasadetentbackgroundinliterarytexts.RomanticistssuchasByronimposedhisideasandreligionontheOrient,andappreciateitasanotherasopposetotheirego.Theypursueandacceptotherculturehypercritically.Fengarguesthatromanticsastonishedbythenativeculture,andthattheyevenrelievetheirfeelingsinthisway.
Secondly,DuPinganalyzesByron’sOrientalviewinADifferentiatingOrientinByronandshelly’spoems(2005).ThroughanalysisofByron’spoem,DuexploresdifferentmethodstoexplaintheOrientunderdifferentbackground.DupresentsanalternativeanalysisofByron,namelyhewasinterestedinOrientbuthedisgustedwithitsdespotism.OrientisByron’sspiritualshelter.Du’sstudyisusefultounderstandByron’stendencyofOrientalism.
Thirdly,LiAimeipublishedanarticlenamedTheOrientalTouchinGeorgeGordonByron’sworks(2007),withananalysisofByron’sclassicalpoetry;
LipointsoutthattheOrientalappearsjustastheotheragainstwhichtodefinehimself.AlthoughByronlovestodescribetheOrientandhislanguagetendstoshowOrientalcharacteristics,thisisonlyamediumtoexpresshislovetohiscountryandthewesternworld.
1.2Purpose,researchmethodandsignificanceofthisthesis
CombiningEdwardW.Said’sOrientalismwithaspectsofOrientalimagesandsceneriesinByron’spoetry,thisthesistrytoanalyzethetendencyofOrientalisminByron’sworks.InByron’spoetrywecanexplorethiskingof“Orientalism”isunconscious.HeshowsympathyforsomeOrientalpeopleandhispersonalexperiencesandsocialenvironmentcompelshimtoappreciateOrient.TheanalysisoftheliteratureonByronshowsthatthestudyofOrientalisminByron’spoetryiscomparativelyscarce,especiallyinChina.ForeignscholarstendtotaketheviewthatByronisdifferentfromotherromanticwriters,becausehiswritingsaboutOrientalgeographicalatmosphere,Orientalreligions,Orientalscenes,OrientalcustomsandOrientalpeoplearetruthfulandtasteful,sinceallthethingsarebasedonByron’sOrientalexperience,sotheinformationofOrientinByron’spoetryisnottakenfromhisimagination.
ThisthesiswillarguethattheformationofOrientalisminByron’spoetrywaspartlyimpersonal.CombinedwithhispersonaleasternexperiencesandtheBritishsocialbackgroundatthetime,theresultisthatByroncouldnotescapetheinfluencesofhislivingenvironment.Basedonthetheoreticalfoundationandthroughtheexplorationofthepoetry,thisthesisisgoingtohaveadeepstudyonthetendencyofOrientalisminByron’spoetry.
II.OrientalismandByron’sOrientalexperience
2.1.TheOrientalisminByron’sday
2.1.1ThedefinitionofOrientalism
AccordingtoOxfordEnglishDictionary(1971),thewordOrientalismintheeighteenthandnineteenthcenturiesgenerallyusedtorefertotheworkoftheOrientalist,ascholarversedinthelanguagesandliteraturesoftheeast;
andintheworldoftheartstoidentifyacharacter,styleorqualitycommonlyassociatedwithEasternnations.AtthesametimeaccordingtoJohnMackenzie,theauthorofOrientalism:
History,Theory,andtheArts(1995),inthelastquarterofeighteenthcenturyandthefirstquarterofnineteenthcentury,thewordcomefromthecontextofBritainRule.Thereitwasusedtorefertooridentifya‘conservativeandromantic’approachtotheproblemsofthegovernment,facedbytheofficialsoftheEastIndiaCompany.AccordingtothisapproachthelanguagesandthelawsofMuslinandHinduIndiashouldnotbeignoredorsupplanted,bututilizedorpreserved,asfoundationsofthetraditionalsocialorder.Foratimethisapproachwasadopted,butattheturnoftheeighteenthcenturyitwaschallengedbyitsoriginalandgeneralmeaning,Orientalismrefertotheacademicstudyandthecombinedforcesofevangelicalismandutilitarianism.Initsgeneralandoriginalmeaning,thewordOrientalismreferstotheacademicstudyofAsiancultures,languagesandpeople.PeoplewhoteachesandresearchestheOrientandthiswillapplieswhoarethepeopleeitherinitsgeneralorspecificaspects,anOrientalist,whatheorshesaysordoesisOrientalism.
Inaverynarrowermeaning,thetermOrientalism,meaningsaviewpointholdbypeopleinthewestern,especiallyintheArabicMiddleEasternpeoplecanseemanyexotic,mysteriousandirrational.Inthemeaning,Orientalismisusedtoassignpatronizingattitudeandusedasintellectualjustificationforcolonialoccupation.
Thisthesisisbasedonthepre-colonialcriticaltheory-Orientalism.Generally,Postcolonialismintroducespowerandpoliticsintotheworldliterarycriticismandexposehowliterature,art,anddramawereimplicitlylinkedtowesterncolonialism.Asaliterarytheory,ittacklewiththeliteratureproducesthatoncecolonizingthecountry’sliterature.Postcolonialcriticaltheory-Orientalismwasadvancedbythecolonizedpeople,especiallyoftheBritishEmpire,whohadattendedBritainuniversities,whentheywantedtobeeducatedwell.UntilthepublicationofthebookOrientalismbyEdwardW.Saidin1978thatcolonialcriticsandtheoristsbegantocreatedacompleteseriesofideas,whichattachedmuchattentiontothecolonialliterature.AsweknowSaidwasoneoftheoutstandingArabic-Americaninwesterncountries.Saidpointsoutlikethefollowing.
