CloseobservationsoverthousandsofhoursenabledFosseytogainthegorillas’trustandbringforthnewknowledgeabouttheirbehaviour.StoriesandphotographsofherworkwerepublishedinNationalGeographicMagazineandelsewhere.
In1977,oneofFossey’sfavoritegorillas,Digit,waskilledbypoachersandsheestablishedtheDigitFundtohelpraisemoneyforgorillaprotectioneffortsinthesameyear.
OnDecember26,1985,FosseywasmurderedwhilegoingbacktoherhouseinKarisoke.Herbodywasdiscoveredneartheresearchcentre.Mostprobably,DianFosseyhadbeenkilledbythepoachersshe’dfoughtagainst.Onhertombstone(墓碑):
