外在的美是短暂的,内在的美才是永恒的。
本论文主要分析简.爱的美,希望有更多的人像‘简.爱’那样拥有内在的美。
首先介绍作者,简爱的生活经历以及小说写作的历史背景。
其次从简.爱的生活经历中,通过心理,语言,思想,行为等方面分析简爱的内在性格,以及简爱的爱情,在人间最美的这件东西上给予了我们很多的启示。

Jane.EyreiswrittenbyfamoustalentedEnglishwomannovelistCharlotteBrontein1846.ItisCharlotteBronte’ssecondnovelandisoneofhermasterpieces.Inthiswork,CharlotteBrontepicturesanamazingfemaleheroineJane.EyreinBritishLiterature.Althoughhavingmorethan152yearsbynow,thisworkispopularwithlotsofpeoplebecauseofitsheroinJaneEyre.Intheearlyyearsofthe19thcenturyVictorianAge,itisamale-dominatedand“moneyaboveall”society,andwomenareregardedassecond-class,unexpectedly,emergingagirlwhodisdainsmoneyandpowerandhasagreatcouragetocombattraditionalinjusticeandoppression.Everyonehashisorherownstandardforwhatisbeauty.Generally,therearetwokindsofbeauty,physicalbeautyandinnerbeauty.InJane‘speriod,peopleusuallymeasureapersononthebasisofsocialstatus,wealthandphysicalbeauty.Onthecontrary,Janeisanorphan,pennilessandplain.Shepossessesneitherwealthnorphysicalbeauty,whichareconsideredsymbolsofawomen’ssocialpositioninhertimes.

JaneEyreisthemasterpieceofCharlotteBrontewhoisafamoustalentedEnglishcriticalrealistwomannovelistinthe19thcentury.ItranksasoneofthegreatestandmostperenniallypopularworksofEnglishfiction,althoughhavingmorethan152yearsbynow.Itispopularwithlotsofpeoplebecauseofitsheroine—Jane.Eyre.
A.IntroductiontoCharlotteBronte
CharlotteBrontewasbornatThornton,inYorkshireEngland,thethirdofsixchildren.Herfather,PatrickBronte,anIrishAnglicanclergyman,hermother,MariaBarnwellBronte,diedofcanceronSeptember15th1821.InAugust1824,charlotteBronteweresentwiththreeofhersisterstotheClergyDaughters’SchoolatCowanBridge.Itspoorconditions,permanentlyaffectsherhealthandphysicaldevelopment,andhastensthedeathsofhertwoeldersistersabout11and10yearsold.Soonafter,shemovedfromtheschoolandlivedwithhersurvivingbrotherandsisters,EmilyandAnne.Theybegantowritestories,articlesandpoemstogether.Inordertogetnormaleducation,CharlottecontinuedhereducationatRoeHeedSchoolinMirfieldfrom1831to1842,whereshemetherlifelongfriendsandcorrespondents.Between1835and1838,shereturnedasateacher.In1839,shetookupthefirstofmanypositionsasgovernesstoafamilyinYorkshire,acareershepursueduntil1841.AfterherauntdiedofinternalobstructioninOctober1842,CharlottereturnedalonetoBrusselsin1843.InMay1846,Charlotte,Emily,andAnnepublishedajointcollectionofpoetryunderassumednamesofCurrer,EllisandActionBell,althoughonlytwocopiesweresold,theydecidedtocontinuewritingforpublicationandbeganworkingontheirfirstnovels.Itisveryunfortunate,in1848herbrotherdiedofChronicBronchitis.EmilyandAnnebothdiedofpulmonarytuberculosisin1848and1849respectively.Sheandherfatherleftalone.Undertheveryhardshipcondition,CharlottecontinuouslyworkedhardinthejourneyofcreatingliteratureandpublishedShirleyandVilletteandbegantocreatelongnovelEmmain1853.OnJune1854,CharlottemarriedArthurBellNicholls,herfather’scurate.Shediedninemonthslaterduringherfirstpregnancy.
B.HistoricalBackground
TheearlyyearsoftheVictorianAgewasatimeofrapideconomicdevelopment.Englanddevelopedintoarich,advancedindustrialcountry;
however,thereweremanysocialproblems,forinstancethesharpestcontrastbetweentherichandthepoorandrigidsocialhierarchy.Inthisperiod,womenwerestillregardedassecond-classhierarchy.Howeversomeoutstandingwomenappeared,suchasfamouswomenwritersBrontesisters.TheyweregreatEnglishrealistsofthetime.Theycreatedpicturesofbourgeoiscivilization,showingthemiseryandsufferingofthecommonpeople.Althoughcapitalisthasappeared,oldconventionandprejudiceremaineddominant.Womenwerestillregardedasthesecond-classhierarchy.Atthistime,womenwereemployedascheaplaborandwereforcedtodoveryhardjobs,andtheydidnotgetthevoteuntil1918.SointhelateperiodofVictorianAge,afeministmovementstartedfightingforwomen’sequalityandfreedom,andfortheireducationalandemploymentopportunities.Petitionstoparliamentadvocatingwomen’ssuffragewereintroducedasearlyasinthe1840.
C.JaneEyre’sPathofLife
JaneEyre’slifeisfulloftears,misery,andstarvation,butsheconstantlystrivestobecomestrongerandhasthecouragetofightcontinuouslyforfreedomandequality.Shebecomesstrong-mindedandpersistentinstrugglingagainstherfate.
1.LifeinGatesheedandLowoodInstitution
JaneEyreisanorphan,sobroughtupbyheruncle.Whensheistenyearsold,herunclediedtoo.LittleJaneislefttolivewithherauntMrs.Reedwhoisdespotic,prejudiced,harshandunsympathetic.Mrs.ReedletsherdaughtersandsonclusterroundherperfectlyhappyandkeepslittleJaneatadistance.Mrs.ReeddeclaresthatJaneisnotimportantthanaservantinherfamily.OtherpeoplesdonotgiveanysympathytoJanebecausesheisnotprettyandherparentsleavehernothing.Someoftheservantsprejudicetoher.Furthermore,JaneisoftenbeatenandinsultedbyhercousinJohn.AsJanesaysthateverynerveshehasfearshim,andeverymorseloffleshinherbonesshrinkswhenJohncomenear.OnedayJohnstrikesJanecruellyandhard.WhenJohnliftsthebooktohither,shereallycannotbearbad-treatmentanymoreandchangehertolerancetorebelliousfeelings.ShepointstoJohn,claimsthatheiswickedandcruelboy,andisliketheevilrulersofancientRome.Then,Mrs.ReedimprisonsJaneinthered-roominwhichJane’suncleReeddied.Whilelockedinit,Janebelievesthatsheseesheruncle’sghost,thenJanecreamsandfaints,thefearthatchildrenofthisagecantrulyfeel.
WhenJaneawakestofindherinthecareofBessiewhoisaservantinGatesheedandsheistheonlyonewhogivesJanelotsofkindness.Inaddition,thekinddoctorwhosuggestsMrs.ReedtosendJanetoschool,thenJanegoestoLowood,acharityschool,theschoolconditionisveryharshandthegirlscouldnotevenkeepthesimplestlivingstandard.Theschoolheadmasterisverysevereandhard-heatedpersonwhopreventsthegirlsfromhavingnormalmentalgrowth.Athere,JanebefriendsayounggirlnamedHelenBurns.Thestudentsinthisschooloftensufferstarvationandfrost.Thebadconditionandimperiousrulesmakeallthepupilslosetheircleverchildrennatureandmakemostofthemtendtocatchdiseaseseasily.AmassivetyphusepidemicsweepsLowood,andHelendiesofconsumption.Janesurvivesforhertenaciouswillpower.ShespendseightmoreyearsatLowood.Duringtheeightyears,Janebecomesateacheraftersixyears’hardwork.

AfteryearsofmiseryintheLowoodSchool,JaneadvertisesforapositionofgovernessfinallysheisemployedtoteachaneightyearsoldFrenchgirlnamedAdelewhosecustodianisMr.RochestermasterofThornfieldHall.JanegetsalongwithAdeleverywell.AsforRochester,heisaveryproud,sardonic,harshandmoodymasterofThorfieldHallbutheiskind-heartedtoJane.AthereJanealsomeetsakindheartedMissTemplewhohasnopowerinthewordbutpossessesgreatspiritualstrengthandcharm,notonlyshesheltersJanefrompain,shealsoencouragesherintellectualdevelopment.
