1.RealityCheck
Stepnumberoneistorecognizewhatistakingplacechemicallyinyourbrainwhenyou’refeelinganxiousorshy.
Youarenotabnormal;
yourbrainisjust“unusually”sensitivetonewstimuli,causingyoutoproceedwithextremecaution–usually“unnecessarycaution.”Justknowingthiswillhelpyourationalizewhat’sgoingonandwillhelprelaxyouinfuturesituations.
Noneedtobecomeshyoranxious,justtellyourselfthatit’sjustsomechemicalsandcellsreactingbasedonaperceivedthreatthat’snotreallythere–noneedtopanic(ignoretheracingheartandsweatypalms)–justcalmdownandproceedintelligently.
2.Don’tPonderonNegativeThoughts
Whenyougiveapresentation–there’salwaysthreepresentationsinvolved:
There’sthepresentationyouplannedongiving,there’sthepresentationyouactuallygave,andthenthere’sthepresentationyouwishyougave.
Whenyoufocusonwhatyoucouldhavedonebetter,whenyoufocusonthenegative,youcreateacycleofnegativity.Afteryouleaveameeting,oradinnerparty,orasocialgathering,don’tponderonhowyoucouldhavebeen“better.”Don’tthink,“WhydidIsaythat?
”
”。
Everyonesayssomethingfoolishfromtime-to-time,however,focusingonnegativitywillleadyoutobelievethatyouareapersonwhosaysthewrongthingsatsocialgatherings;
thatbeliefwillmanifestitselfeverytime.Recognizethateveryonesayssomethingfoolishfromtime-to-time;
don’tponder,moveon.
每个人难免都会说些蠢话,如果你只看到消极面,渐渐就会真的以为自己在社交时只会说错话;
3.NoPressure
Don’tfeelpressuretobeinteresting,entertaining,ortalkative.Justbeyournormal-naturalself.It’sthepressuretobelikesomeoneelsethatenhancessocialanxietyandshyness.
Youhavesurvivedparticipatinginconversationsyourentirelife.Yournextconversationinagroupisjustonemoreconversation–youarenotrequiredtobethelifeoftheparty.Justbeyourselfandspeakyourmindwhenyouhavesomethingtosay–andifyoudon’thaveanythingtosay–nopressure;
“chillout”andhavefun.
你只要做好自己,有话就说、无话则沉默;
4.Don’tAssume
Don’tassumethatpeoplearejudgingyou.Mostpeopleareprimarilyconcernedaboutthemselvesandhowtheycomeacross;
theydon’thavetimetobeconsumedbyyourbehavior.Rememberthis,ifyoudon’trememberanythingelseinthisarticle:
Everyoneisawkwardattimes!
Whenhavingconversations,everysinglepersonatonetimeoranotherdoesorsayssomethingthat’salittleawkward.Don’tfeelthatawkwardsituationsorstrangesilencesareyourfaultalone.Don’ttakecreditforallthenegativesinaconversation.Awkwardthingswillhappen,therewillbesilences,that’sokay;
it’sperfectlynormal,don’tthinkit’snotandkeeponbeingyourself–yourbestself.
尴尬时常发生,沉默也总是出现,没什么大不了的;
5.Don’tPanic–Pause
There’snoneedtopanicinsocialsituations.Ifsomeoneasksyouaquestion,justpause.Thinkaboutthequestionandthenansweritappropriately.Mostsociallyanxiousorshyindividualsreacttoquestions.Theyfeeltheneedtoansweraquestionimmediately,assoonasthefinalwordleavesthemouthoftheotherperson;
theyfeelobligatedtostartspeaking–notnecessary.
他们觉得只要对方话刚说完,就该作出回答;
Youneverwanttoreacttoaquestion;
youalwayswanttorespond,afteryoupause.
Whenyoudothis,youwillsoundmorethoughtful,moreinsightful,andyouwillhavegivenmoredeliberatethoughttowhatyou’reabouttosay.Youwillappeartohave“executivepresence.”
Theneedtorespondrightawayshowsthatapersonisn’tcomfortablewithsilence.It’susuallytheleast“powerful”personinaconversationwhodoesn’twanttheretobesilence,butsilenceisokay.Itshowsthatyouarecomfortableinyourskin.
Solearntopause,neverpanic!
Gatheryourthoughts,avoidsaying“um”andanswerliketheintelligentpersonthatyouare.
6.BodyLanguage
Yourphysiologywilldetermineyourpsychology.
Avoidhavingthebodylanguageofsomeonewhoisshyand/ortimid.Don’thaunchoverandtrynottobeseen.
Standtall,shouldersback.Peoplewillbelievethebodylanguageyouportraymorethanthewordsyousay!
Ifyoulooktimid,peoplewillbelieveyouaretimidandwilltreatyoulikeatimidperson.
Tobeseenasaleader,walklikeapresident.Takeupspace—likeyou’reaking.Putyourfeetonthedesk,makelargehandgestures,standtall.Ifyoupossessthebodylanguageofaleader,peoplewillbegintotreatyoulikealeader.Theywillassumethatifyouhandleyourselflikeaking,ifyoudresslikeaking,youmusthavegoodreasonfordoingso.Peoplewillbelievetheimageyouportray!
7.BeTheFirstToInitiate
Don’twaitforotherstointroduceyou;
youshouldinitiatetheintroduction.IrecentlysawU.S.PresidentBarackH.Obamaontelevision;
hewaswalkingintoavotinglocationtocasthisballotforthe2012U.S.PresidentialElection.Iwatchedtoseehowhisdemeanordifferedfromothers.
Here’swhatstoodout:
hewalkedconfidentlywithasmileonhisface,andhetooktimetointroducehimselftotheindividualsintheroom.That’sall,anditmadehimappeartobeverypresidential,veryconfidentinhimself.
Hecouldhavewalkedintherewithhisheadhelddown,assumingeveryoneknewwhohewas,likethesociallyanxious.Butinstead,heownedhisspace,heinitiatedcontactandlookedverypowerfulintheprocess.
本来他也可以低着头走过去,心里猜测别人怎么看他,一副社交焦虑的样子;
8.MoveSlow
One“surefire”waytoappearsociallyanxiousistomakelotsofsuddenmovements.Considerthelion,theliononlymoveswhenitisnecessary,allofitsmovementsaredeliberate.Thelionappearsconfident;
thelionisconfident.
Nowimaginethechipmunk,chipmunksareconstantly“lookingovertheirshoulder,”theymakelotsofsuddenmovements,alwaysonthewatch–alwaysappearingtobesupremelynervousandonguardagainstattackers.
Slow,deliberatemovementswillnotonlymakeyouappearmoreconfident,itwillactuallycontributetoyourpersonalconfidencebank…soavoid“chipmunklike”behavior.
9.TakeUpSpace
Youmustlearntotakeupspace;
powerfulpeopletakeuplotsofspace.Don’tholdyourarmsintowardsyourbody–openthemup.Ifyou’reinameeting,spreadyourthingsout,usebodylanguagethatmakesyouappearlargerthanlife.Anxiouspeopleshrink;
confidentpeopleexpandandshine.
你必须学会压住气场;
焦虑的人畏首畏尾;
Asyoupracticetakingupspace–youwillappearmoreconfidentandincontrol.
10.TheSecrettoSuccess
Ifyouareasociallyanxiousorshyperson,youareprobablyveryfamiliarwiththatheartthumpingfeelingyougetwhenspeakinginfrontofacrowd.Theheartthumpingfeelingthatcausesyoutogetflusteredandforgetwhatyou’reabouttosay.Ifthisisyou,I’vewrittenthesenextfewlineswithyouinmind–becauseIwanttodocumentforyouhowyoucaneasilysucceedwhenthishappensnexttime.
