Abstract
Wirelessmeshnetworks(WMNs)withchaintopologiesareveryusefulinroadandrailroadtransportationorintunnelandmineapplications.TheproposedprotocolsforWMNsusuallysupportbest-efforttrafficorsomekindofQualityofService(QoS).However,someapplicationssuchasremote-controlledmachinesinindustrialcontrolnetworkshavehardreal-time(HRT)requirements,i.e.,strictdeadlines.Forthisreason,thispaperincorporatesthePacketDeliveryRatio(PDR)metricintotheWICKPro(WIrelessChainnetworKProtocol)protocol,aHRTprotocolforWMNswithchaintopologieswhichusesatoken-passingapproach.WICKProisaMediumAccessControl(MAC)protocolbasedontheideasoftheTimed-tokenprotocolandthecyclicexecutive.TheincorporationofthePDRmetricletscalculatetheneededtimetobereservedwherepacketretransmissionscanbeaccommodatedwhilesatisfyingHRTtrafficconstraints.Moreover,thefeasibilityofusingthePDRmetricinatoken-passingprotocolisshown.SinceWICKProhasbeendesignedtoworkontopofIEEE802.11,wemadeatestbedusingcommercial802.11wirelesscardsandcomparedtheWICKPro’sperformancewiththe802.11protocolandthreespecificprotocolsforWMNswithchaintopologies.

Intheveryactivefieldofcomplexnetworks,researchadvanceshavelargelybeenstimulatedbytheavailabilityofempiricaldataandtheincreaseincomputationalpowerneededfortheiranalysis.Theseworkshaveledtotheidentificationofsimilaritiesinthestructuresofsuchnetworksarisinginverydifferentfields,andtothedevelopmentofabodyofknowledge,toolsandmethodsfortheirstudy.
Whilemanyinterestingquestionsremainopenonthesubjectofstaticnetworks,challengingissuesarisefromthestudyofdynamicnetworks.Inparticular,themeasurement,analysisandmodelingofsocialinteractionsarefirstclassconcerns.
Inthisarticle,weaddressthechallengesofcapturingphysicalproximityandsocialinteractionbymeansofawirelessnetwork.Inparticular,asaconcretecasestudy,weexhibitthedeploymentofawirelesssensornetworkappliedtothemeasurementofhealthcareworkers’exposuretotuberculosis-infectedpatientsinaserviceunitoftheBichat–ClaudeBernardhospitalinParis,France.ThisnetworkhascontinuouslymonitoredthepresenceofallHCWsinallroomsoftheserviceduringathreemonthperiod.
Webothdescribethemeasurementsystemthatwasdeployedandsomeearlyanalysisonthemeasureddata.Wehighlightthebiasintroducedbythemeasurementsystemreliabilityandprovideareconstructionmethodwhichnotonlyleadstoasignificantlymorecoherentandrealisticdatasetbutalsoevidencesphenomenaapriorihiddenintherawdata.Bythisanalysis,wesuggestthataprocessingstepisrequiredpriortoanyadequateexploitationofdatagatheredthankstoanon-fullyreliablemeasurementarchitecture.
